Good but room for improvement. 👩🏫✅ We think that's the comment a school teacher would attribute to our South West region's latest environment report card. As a globally-recognised biodiversity hotspot though, it's important we continue striving for improvement. Australia's Environment is an annual report on the changing condition of our natural resources and ecosystems. It's produced by TERN Australia and The Australian National University. Report cards for all 60 of the Natural Resource Management (NRM) regions across Australia - including ours - track changes in various environmental indicators over time. The Summary Score is an overall environmental condition expressed between 0 and 10 relative to previous years. It is calculated as the average of the ranking of component scores from inundation and streamflow, vegetation growth, leaf area, soil protection and tree cover and the number of hot days. As the region's peak environmental organisation, South West NRM has been working for more than 20 years across its two pillars of Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Agriculture to protect and restore. World Water Monitoring Day World Water Monitoring Day, observed annually on September 18, serves as a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about the importance of freshwater resources and the need for their sustainable management. Established in 2003 by the Water Environment Federation (WEF) and other partners, this day encourages individuals and communities to engage in water quality monitoring activities. By empowering citizens to test local water bodies for key indicators such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and bacteria levels, World Water Monitoring Day fosters a sense of stewardship towards water resources and promotes informed decision-making regarding water conservation. The significance of World Water Monitoring Day extends beyond mere awareness; it highlights the critical challenges faced by freshwater ecosystems worldwide. With increasing pollution, over-extraction of water resources, and climate change impacts threatening aquatic environments, this observance emphasizes the necessity for collective action. Educational programs associated with this day aim to equip participants with knowledge about local water issues while encouraging them to advocate for policies that protect water quality. Moreover, the data collected during these monitoring efforts contribute to a broader understanding of regional water health trends and inform future conservation strategies. In addition to fostering community engagement and education, World Water Monitoring Day aligns with global efforts such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. This goal underscores the importance of ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. By participating in monitoring activities on this day, individuals not only contribute valuable data but also become part of a larger movement advocating for equitable access to clean water—a fundamental human right essential for health, economic development, and environmental sustainability. Environmental degradation is something we can all see and feel. It’s imperative that we take action now. We were proud to join the 2nd Minister for Education, Dr. Maliki Osman, along with colleagues from the POLITE sector, in bringing students, staff, and the community together to contribute to sustaining our earth. Through the initiative, Adopt-a-Block, we are doing our part to promote sustainable living. Let’s all take steps, no matter how small, to make a positive impact on our environment. 🌍💧 #Sustainability #Environment #CommunityAction #SustainableLiving Comments by some participants · I have also learnt the value of carrying my own water bottle around too. · A small step. · An inconvenience but I do need to heighten my awareness of the damage I can cause to our environment. · A hope that this action will influence others to join this race to save the earth.
