Do you need to read the full book? 📙 At READ TO LEAD®, we use book summaries to share key ideas from non-fiction texts—either from partners like Blinkist, direct contributions from the author, or a blend of AI and lived experience from the leaders we work with. People are busier and more distracted than ever, and with some books feeling padded out, and many preferring to spend their reading time relaxing with fiction, summaries are a savvy way to broaden your knowledge and thinking. Personally, I love books summaries to refresh on a previous read—I always forget the 7 habits—to vet a book to decide if it’s worth diving deeper, and to gain a variety of perspectives on the same topic quickly. I have also noticed that book usage is changing, with many using full texts as more of a reference tool, reading the detail when its relevant, much like how we used encyclopaedias at school (showing my age?!). Someone told me that if a book doesn't become a bestseller, it cannot be good by definition. Well, sadly the publishing world is not a meritocracy. Publishers do not invest into marketing most books they put out, and many will not even appear on shelves - to say nothing of indie publishing. No, becoming a bestselling author and becoming a good author are not the same thing. Many of the greatest authors, composers, painters and so on are not even known about in their time, and a chunk of those who were got famous for other reasons. On the other hand, bestsellers are well targeted, funded and distributed books that are easy to consume, but don't necessarily have staying power. Always be objective about your work, and what you are trying to accomplish. There is no shame in never having sold a single copy, and nor should you idolise anyone just because they have sold a million. Hell, most of the bad and self-contradictory advice on writing out there comes from bestselling authors, who a lot of the time don't realise how much luck and trends played a part in their success, thinking their words are magic, and people believing them because of their status. This is not healthy, for us or literature as a whole. Let's start applying some uncommon sense.

I tend to buy books in bulk. Still waiting on a couple but very excited to make a start on these little gems.... Reading books is far easier than research papers - although the geek in me will still read the research papers in the reference lists :) Although I really prefer to read non-fiction, I'm also making an effort to read more fiction - perhaps when I'm away and getting a change of scene. Studies show that reading fiction books can enhance your creativity. So I'll give it a go. And I love actual books - I don't want to read on a device - that's how I read research papers. For me there is something magical about sitting on the couch with an actual book. I'm always up for a good book recommendation so please feel free to leave some ideas in the comments below for my next bulk order. Reading has always been my way of making sense of the world. It’s where I go to find answers, escape, or just understand perspectives that are different from my own. Some books challenge me. Some comfort me. And some remind me that I’m not alone in feeling lost, inspired, or curious about what’s next. Recently, I read something that stayed with me: "We read to know we’re not alone." It made me realize how much of what I read isn’t just about learning—it’s about connection. With authors, with ideas, and sometimes with parts of myself I didn’t even know needed understanding.
