The civil war in Sudan is rarely given attention in the media, one year after it started. This ‘silent war’ has had long-term and devastating consequences. ARTICLE 19's findings show that the violations of the right to freedom of expression have further increased over the past year - from attacks against the media and journalists, internet shutdowns or manipulation of information. One of the things that has escaped scrutiny so far is the responsibility of online platforms. In this conflict, major social media published no information about steps taken in response to the conflict on their platforms (as compared to some of those related to the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine and the war in Israel and Palestine - albeit those have been strongly criticized). So we urge the platforms to take their responsibility seriously. This includes disclosing the resources they allocated to their content moderation efforts to account for the increased online and offline risks during conflicts, the level of engagement with humanitarian organisations and local civil society groups on the ground (taking into consideration the safety risks of the latter), and whether there are any rapid response systems to enable human rights groups to escalate urgent matters to the platforms and take swift action when user safety is at risk. We also remind internet service providers and telecommunication companies operating in Sudan, including MTN, Zain Group, Sudatel Telecom Group, Ltd, or Canar, of their human rights responsibilities. These include takinge all possible measures to prevent a shutdown that they have been asked to implement from proceeding and prevent or mitigate to the extent possible adverse human rights impacts. They should also publicly disclose details about any shutdown orders they receive. #Sudan #war #platforms #socialmedia #telcos #responsibilities #humanrights #freedomofexpression #connectivity https://lnkd.in/eYsrj5Af

The Media Freedom Observatory condemns the Houthi seizure of the OHCHR office in Sana'a The Media Freedom Observatory in Yemen strongly condemns the Houthi group's forcible seizure of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights #OHCHR headquarters in #Sana'a. The storming and takeover of the OHCHR office is a flagrant violation of international law and the sanctity of international institutions dedicated to protecting human rights in #Yemen. This incident is part of an ongoing pattern of human rights abuses perpetrated by the Houthi group against humanitarian workers and #journalists in Yemen. This latest assault follows a series of escalations, including the arrest of numerous UN staff members, employees of international organizations, and diplomatic personnel, as well as the continued crackdown on press freedom and expression in areas under the group's control, including the ongoing detention of Three Yemeni journalists. The Observatory (MFO - YEMEN) calls on the Houthi group to immediately cease these unlawful practices, release all detained UN staff, international organization employees, diplomatic personnel, and journalists, and end all forms of persecution and restrictions on press freedom in Yemen. The Observatory underscores the need to hold those responsible for this attack accountable and urges the international community to continue supporting the efforts of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Yemen to achieve justice and protect human rights in this war-ravaged country. #MARSADK #SEMC

"TVNZ: Stop the Bias, Report Fairly on West Bank and Gaza ... review your coverage of the genocide to ensure that it is fair, balanced, and aligned with international law and journalistic ethics. Specific examples of biased reporting include recent stories on Gaza that failed to mention the ICJ ruling or the context of an illegal occupation. This includes decades of systematic land confiscation, military control, restrictions on movement, and the suppression of Palestinian voices through media censorship and the shutdown of local newspapers. Accurate and responsible journalism is essential in fostering an informed and empathetic public, especially on matters as sensitive and impactful as this." https://lnkd.in/gdmRMWg7

ARTICLE 19, CPJ and partners urge the ICJ to issue unequivocal measures against Israel to preserve evidence as the Israel/Palestine conflict continues. Israel cannot be allowed to continue operating in the dark. We support South Africa’s request that Israel be ordered to take all effective measures to ensure and facilitate the unimpeded access to Gaza for fact-finding missions, internationally-mandated bodies and/or officials, investigators, and journalists. Despite the valiant efforts of Palestinian journalists who continue reporting despite a daily struggle to survive, Israel’s censorious actions make it nearly impossible to document what happens on the ground in Gaza, and risk significantly hampering future accountability efforts. ‘The assault on journalists and people’s right to access information violates international and humanitarian law, says Barbora Bukovská, Senior Director for Law and Policy at ARTICLE 19. 'It is vital that the ICJ is crystal clear: Israel's actions must stop.’ https://lnkd.in/eRRnBDFc

Stop attacking journalists (and all others). We need to listen to each other. In order to do so, we need to get the unmodified, factual, and as unbiased information as possible to listen to. This is why free press is so important. www.pax.ngo & www.convergence.ngo
Powerful Financial Times editorial today on the plight of journalists in Gaza. "The loss of so many journalists and destruction of media offices...is shattering the basis of a functioning media once the conflict ends. It is another example of the damage being wrought to the human and physical fabric of life in Gaza. Without an immediate ceasefire, there will soon be nothing left."

ARTICLE 19 calls for an end to the persistent pattern of impunity for crimes committed against journalists in Palestine and Lebanon, including at least 134 killings to date. 👉 International humanitarian law is clear: journalists are not a target. 👉 We urge international courts and authorities using accountability mechanisms to investigate crimes and human rights violations committed since 7 October 2023 to prioritise crimes against journalists in their investigations – crimes that have severely hindered the documentation of international law violations in both countries. 👉 We also urge international courts and accountability mechanisms to acknowledge that attacks against journalists play a significant role in enabling atrocities in these armed conflicts. https://lnkd.in/gWuerDNR

The United Nations has condemned Israel for the alarming increase in the killing of journalists in Gaza, emphasizing the blatant disregard for international laws protecting media workers. UN human rights experts have highlighted that over 120 journalists have been killed since the onset of intensified military operations by Israel in October 2023. This spike in violence against journalists has made Gaza the deadliest region for reporters in recent history. The experts have also noted a disturbing pattern where journalists, clearly identified by their press gear, are deliberately targeted, obstructing their ability to report on the conflict and silencing critical voices. The Committee to Protect Journalists has reported that the number of journalists killed in Gaza during this period is unprecedented, surpassing the annual death toll for journalists in any country since records began. Notable among these tragic incidents is the case of Wael al-Dahdouh, an Al-Jazeera journalist who lost several family members in Israeli airstrikes. The UN has called for independent investigations into these killings and urged Israel to allow journalists safe access to Gaza to ensure unbiased reporting. The international community has been urged to hold Israel accountable and ensure the protection of journalists as per international humanitarian law. #Isreal #unitednations #Gaza #journalist #news #globalpoliticaaffairs

Today, we recognize World Press Freedom Day. #WPFD serves as a reminder of the critical importance of safeguarding the fundamental right to freedom of expression and the press. The USAID - Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI) Littorals Regional Initiative team in Ghana wrote about how manipulated information online has exacerbated longstanding ethnic tensions in the border town of Bawku. LRI worked with FactSpace West Africa, an Accra-based International Fact-Checking Network-verified organization to provide fact-checking and social listening training to journalists, strengthening ethical reporting and reducing the spread of manipulated information. Upholding press freedom and promoting accurate reporting are crucial in fostering inter-ethnic collaboration and countering negative narratives. #WPFD2024 https://lnkd.in/edKD95uD

Zan News: The "Federation of Afghan Journalists in Exile" states that three years into Taliban rule, the situation in Afghanistan is worsening day by day, making the country unsafe for journalists, human rights defenders, civil activists, and security forces. On Saturday (July 20), this federation, in an gathering, called for an end to the forced deportation of journalists, human rights defenders, security forces, and at-risk individuals from Iran. Members of this federation stated: "After the Taliban's return to power and the imposition of numerous restrictions, along with the fear of being pursued, arrested, and tortured, hundreds of journalists, human rights defenders, and at-risk individuals fled Afghanistan, seeking refuge in Iran with hopes of eventually reaching immigrant-friendly countries." The statement from the "Federation of Afghan Journalists in Exile" noted that with the intensified forced deportation of millions of Afghan migrants, including at-risk individuals in Iran, these people are now in a very difficult situation. This comes as the International Organization for Migration reported last Thursday that from April to June of this year, 858,170 people have returned to Afghanistan from Iran and Pakistan, while 532,854 people have migrated to these countries. According to the report, 56% of these Afghans returned from Iran involuntarily, 46% voluntarily, and 39% due to economic difficulties. #zantv
