💙 this short video explaining empathy! I use it in my workshops all the time to teach what empathy misses are. The eyeroll gets me every time! 😂
I can’t believe it’s been ten years since we first met that damn “Wanna sandwich?” empathy-fail deer! Thank you Katy Ross (Gobblynne) and The RSA (The royal society for arts, manufactures and commerce) for turning this talk into an amazing cartoon. ❤️, BB https://lnkd.in/gVFU5eW8

Such a great video, deffintely worth watching! The distinction between empathy and sympathy is so powerful! Sympathy often feels like trying to put a Band-Aid on something, while empathy creates real connection. What are some ways you’ve found helpful to avoid the 'silver lining' trap when someone is sharing something hard with you? #EmpathyMatters #EmotionalConnection #ActiveListening

Empathy and sympathy are incredibly different concepts and come with different actions. no one describes empathy quite as well as Brené Brown! “Words rarely make something better. What makes something better is connection.” ❤️ Watch this fantastic video that explains the difference between the two!

Have you seen the RSA short on empathy based on a talk by Brené Brown? It’s a gem and now 10 years old already. Find the link to watch it below! 🤩 And we wonder if this video will sneak its way into our full Dare to LeadTM program this Fall 2024! Empathy and empathy misses, as well as self-compassion with yourself, certainly have an important place in the curriculum and as skill sets for brave leaders. #daringleadership #empathy #courage #caring

I have been a big Brené Brown fan for many years. Her messages really help me grow personally and professionally - and her messages give me the insights, language and tools to work through “my stuff”. Still more work to do - but growth is growth! The empathy video she is celebrating below has been something I have shared many times in my life. When I was diagnosed the second time with breast cancer, I put a link to the video in one of my posts on my medical blog. At that time, my wife and I were reeling from the news (again) and we had a hard time answering the inevitable “let me know what I can do to help” or the “at least….” statements that continually rolled in. (“At least they caught it early”, “at least it hasn’t spread”, “at least you have a supportive spouse”, “at least Quinn is older this time around - I can’t imagine how you did this when he was a toddler”.) This post is not meant to shame anyone - we have a loving community that has supported us through cancer more than once and they did an amazing job - me and my family are grateful! I truly believe people are doing the best that they can. I am still doing my work to stop myself from being the “wanna sandwich” person with those that I know and love. (Side note: My wife and I say “wanna sandwich” to each other when we have an empathy fail moment or we witness those types of statements from others. In the moment it makes us mindful and it provides a moment of laughter - which is nice, especially in hard times.) My goal of this post is to recognize the gift of life changing messages like this that help give us the words at a time when we can’t come up with them on our own. Empathy is hard to do and sitting with someone while they are hurting and not “fixing it” or “at leasting it” is extremely hard for many - including me. This short video on empathy has the power to educate many and helps us all do the best that we can for those that we know and love. 💜 #empathy #empathyfail #brenebrown #doingthebestwecan

Still one of the best tools for explaining empathy! And why is empathy important in business? Because despite the emergence of AI, business is people. Empathy is at the foundation of partnership, negotiation, and collaboration. It is readily apparent in the policies and culture of companies where people are respected and valued. Empathy allows us to see someone else’s perspective. It motivates, validates, and enlarges all that is good. And it helps us to be better partners, parents, and friends!

One of my favorite videos! This short video provides such a clear message around empathy (and how it differs from sympathy). It really changed the way I thought about and intentionally practice empathy. Highly recommend giving it a watch!
