Last night UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre launched the climate technology report. This is a review of the current state of climate technology and assessment of what needs to be done to try and achieve the Paris Agreement goals. Looking at this from a PNG 🇵🇬perspective a few things stood out. Almost all progress and development is focused on electricity. The world is moving away from trying to improve and clean up fossil fuels and towards how to “electrify everything”. For PNG, with less than 20% of our population having access to electricity, this means trying to expand the PNG Power Ltd grid and building minigrids and stand alone power systems in remote areas. For almost all situations this is going to involve a massive build out of #solar power with some hydroelectricity where it’s appropriate. Solar is by far the cheapest and quickest way to increase the supply of electricity but we need to prepare our systems (technical, legal and financial) to absorb it. It starts with policy. We need National Energy Authority - Papua New Guinea to install the correct rules and regulations that allow investors and developers to build what the market is already demanding. This might be new electricity tariffs, construction guidelines that mandate space for solar panels and batteries in new buildings or upgraded transformers near electric vehicle charging routes. We also need capacity, the men and women who can design, manage and install the infrastructure we need. Many of these workers are school children right now. They need educational pathways that train them for the jobs of the future. When it comes to finance we need to work with banks and financial institutions to derisk the investment environment so that billions of Kina can flow into the required areas. Smaller developers need assistance to deliver last mile electricity in a market that’s becoming overwhelmingly focused on big ticket investments. This is area donor partners like the PNG Electrification Program or Multilateral Development Banks like Asian Development Bank (ADB), IFC - International Finance Corporation or The World Bank have a role to play. Last but not least is technology. This is already very mature but to implement it properly it’s essential to have made progress on the previous things listed. The PPL grid needs to be transformed and it may even make sense to unbundle it into different organisations that focus on generation, transmission and retail. As solar and especially batteries become ubiquitous the job of the utility is going to transform a lot. All of the above might sound like a lot but most of it has examples elsewhere we can learn from and emulate. By far the biggest challenge is changing our current mindset into one that is prepared to embrace new ideas. We have to look at these changes as opportunities not obstacles. When we transform our electricity sector it will empower and enrich us all.

With less than 10 days until COP29, UNEP-CCC published the 2024 Climate Technology Progress Report, an essential update on the world’s progress in transitioning to renewable energy and meeting ambitious climate targets. This report arrives at a crucial moment, as COP28 shifts focus towards ending fossil fuel reliance and countries commit to tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency by 2030. Amidst the urgency highlighted by the Global Stocktake, which shows we’re not on track to meet the 1.5°C target, the CTPR provides a comprehensive view of the progress made and the support needed for a technology-driven transition.  The report explores multiple areas including renewable energy adoption rates, feasibility assessments, financing, digitization, and governance. Here are some key highlights: 🔹 With the integration of energy storage solutions, renewable-powered electricity systems are becoming increasingly viable and cost-competitive with fossil fuel-based systems. 🔹 Many renewable technologies demonstrate high potential for energy system transitions, creating synergies between mitigation, adaptation, and sustainable development. 🔹 Financial resources not only enable capacity growth but also drive significant cost reductions in climate technologies. 🔹 A holistic policy approach that addresses the energy sector, finance, and the broader economy is essential to reduce capital costs and incentivize renewable energy investment, including energy storage. 🔹 Digital innovations, guided by responsible governance, can accelerate renewable energy adoption, enhance mitigation efforts, and deliver cross-sectoral benefits. 🔹 Emerging digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence, are increasingly important for mapping renewable energy potential, boosting efficiency, and creating connections with sectors like water and agriculture. With key decisions anticipated at COP29, especially around the NCQG, this report will be an invaluable resource for negotiators, policymakers, and industry stakeholders as they build on these findings.
