Violence against women takes many forms: physical, emotional, economic, and social. It happens in homes, workplaces, schools, and public spaces. But today, we remember that it doesn't have to continue. Together, we can break the cycle. NYSC & SDG ACTION: GLOBAL VOICES UNITED TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN As the President of the SDG CDS group, I had the incredible honor of leading my team on an outreach program at new market in Ijebu Ode, focused on the #EliminationofViolenceAgainstWomen on the 27th of November. This initiative was part of the #16DaysofActivism Against Gender-Based Violence, and it was a powerful experience to connect with the community and amplify this urgent message. Our outreach was filled with impactful moments—engaging discussions, cardboard messages, and heartfelt conversations. Using a public address system, we spoke out boldly about the many forms of violence women face daily and why it must end What stood out to me most was the energy and passion of my team. Together, we didn’t just share information; we inspired conversations, challenged harmful norms, and encouraged others to join this fight. The smiles, nods, and questions from community members reminded me that change begins when we spark awareness and plant the seeds of action. Violence against women is not just their burden to bear—it’s a societal problem, and it’s up to all of us to address it. By working together, we can create a world where every woman and girl lives free from fear and harm. To my incredible SDG members and everyone who supported this program, thank you for standing for what’s right. Today we commemorate the 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐕𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐀𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 - 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟓, and the beginning of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence (GBV). The national theme for this year's 16 days campaign is “𝑭𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝑱𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒆: 𝑬𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑽𝒊𝒐𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑰𝒎𝒑𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝑨𝒈𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒕 𝑾𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑮𝒊𝒓𝒍𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒔𝒑𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒔” with a focus also on Technologically-Facilitated Gender Based Violence. (TFGBV). The 16 Days Campaign was launched 31 years ago in 1991 by the Center for Women's Global Leadership (CWGL) and feminists from around the world at the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute and this has been used worldwide to call for the elimination of GBV. It is run annually from November 25 (International Day Against Violence Against Women) to December 10 (World Human Rights Day). Despite a lot of structural changes in the formal justice systems, legislations and policies, Fiji is plagued with an epidemic of violence against women and girls, with some of the highest recorded rates of VAWG globally. As it stands, 2 out of 3 Fijian women are being subjected to physical or sexual violence in their lifetime (64%), and 44% of ever-partnered women having experienced physical attacks classed as ‘very severe’. Women and girls are often subjected to sexual derogatory remarks in online spaces as well and this is a daily reminder of the challenges faced by women's human rights advocates who continue to fight against gender based violence in all spaces. This year, FWRM is launching a social media campaign "𝓛𝓲𝓼𝓽𝓮𝓷 𝓽𝓸 𝓱𝓮𝓻 𝓼𝓽𝓸𝓻𝔂. 𝓑𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓼𝓲𝓵𝓮𝓷𝓬𝓮! " where we will share real case stories of women and girls who were victims/survivors of rape in Fiji. The stories will show the trauma and heartbreak experienced by victims/survivors, in our efforts to demystify rape myths, perceptions and stereotypes. Rape is an act of violence and a violation of fundamental human rights and freedoms. We continue to stand in solidarity with all victims/survivors of rape in Fiji, and call for an end to impunity for sexual violence in Fiji! Watch this space.
