👉 Bill Gates discusses recent Stoltenberg Committee report, co-authored by committee members BCEPS Director Ole F. Norheim and BCEPS Ghana NCD Project Lead Lumbwe Chola, in op-ed in Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten: "Norges lederskap redder millioner av liv" ("Norway's leadership saves millions of lives"). "Although Norway is a relatively small nation, it has had an enormous impact on global health. The world needs Norway to continue to be a global leader. The Stoltenberg report sets an ambitious goal: to halve the number of premature deaths globally by 2050. It may sound unrealistic, but I believe it is possible – perhaps even before 2050. The reason I have faith is that we have already done it once before". ~ Bill Gates 🇳🇴 Link to the original article (in Norwegian): https://lnkd.in/dNsh26kG 🇬🇧 You can read a translated version of the article in English here: https://lnkd.in/dbVW5d7P University of Bergen (UiB) Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Alrek helseklynge #billgates #gatesfoundation #oped #norway #foreignaid #governmentaid #globaldevelopment #50by50 #developmentaid #globalhealth #publichealth #newreport

Bill Gates published an op-ed in Norway's largest newspaper yesterday on how the country has been leading in the field of global health, with investments per capita and relative to the GDP much higher & bucking the trends seen in other OECD countries where investments have dwindled. I hope Norway can continue this trend, our interconnected world needs this now more than ever. Read it here (also in English): #globalhealth #healthpolicy

In an era of instant communication, the prolonged absence of a nation's leader can spark a wildfire of speculation. Cameroon finds itself at the center of such a storm, as 91-year-old President Paul Biya's month-long public absence following a visit to China has ignited rumors about his health and even his survival. This scenario eerily echoes past events in Nigeria, where the disappearance of leaders has led to public unrest and bizarre conspiracy theories. In 2010, President Umaru Yar'Adua's extended medical leave in Saudi Arabia created a power vacuum, leading to political instability until his death was officially announced. Cameroon's government has also attempted to quell concerns, with the director of the Civil Cabinet, Samuel Mvondo Ayolo, issuing a statement that Biya is in "excellent health" and working from Geneva, Switzerland. However, in an age of deepfakes and disinformation, many Cameroonians are demanding more tangible proof of their long-serving leader's well-being. Read more

Big news for Congo Justice! ⚖ ⬇️ Via our comrade @kambalem "We are pleased to announce the release of an important and historic dossier on the Congo, its people, and its resources, published on June 25, 2024, by the Tricontinental Institute for Social Research in partnership with Congolese institutions. This dossier originated from a conversation we had with Tricontinental director Vijay Prashad before the COVID pandemic. We emphasized the need for a true narrative of the situation in the Congo, beyond the usual portrayal of misery and death. Now that it’s complete, I am deeply thankful to everyone who helped make this dossier possible. We invite you to read, share with your network, and provide feedback on the analysis presented in this dossier. This historic collaboration would not have been possible without the engagement of the Centre Culturel Andrée Blouin, CERECK, Likambo Ya Mabele, and countless Congolese and international researchers who have dedicated the past year to completing this research. - Kambale Musavuli" ——— 📢📢 *New Tricontinental dossier: _The Congolese Fight for Their Own Wealth_* The Democratic Republic of the Congo is home to vast mineral wealth – including cobalt, lithium, and coltan – that is essential for modern technology. Despite this, the Congolese people suffer extreme poverty. Historical and ongoing conflicts, driven by global capitalist interests, have destabilised the region. This dossier underscores the fight for sovereignty and dignity, ending with the words of young Congolese activists who have identified eight categories that are key to building their path to freedom.

National organizations in Belize are often invited to regional or global meetings. Not realizing that the invitation forms part of a transnational framework or strategy for advocacy. Their immediate priorities of job, food, shelter and justice often clash with the intangible of information exchange and awareness raising. As I am told the intangible has a different outcome vs tangible demands on the ground. I find that the struggle is to find out what does this mean in practice. Turnover rates, political disruptions, illness all play a role in how effective we are in change and transformation. I am always troubled in the Caribbean region struggle around translating the intangible to tangible. A problem, that might be everywhere. And so I make the point visible political representation has value, but not without defined national outcomes by the advocate. While one meeting in Kenyan, might not change national concerns, seeing the link to a meeting in NYC, Barbados, Copenhagen offers a wider point of strategic analysis that can inform recomendations. The struggle continues at the OAS General Assembly and our coalition meeting in Paraguay.

Governments have a critical responsibility to ensure health systems are not only accessible but also resilient enough to transcend borders, political divides, and humanitarian crises. Strengthening governance in health means prioritizing equity, inclusivity, and sustainable solutions—leaving no one behind.
