Since day one of joining as a postgraduate student at WMG, University of Warwick and studying Supply Chain and Logistics Management (SCLM) course (led by Ahmed Tarek El-Said, Ph.D. CMILT. SFHEA), I have an intention to share the summary points of taught modules so my connections could also learn SCLM theory and refresh the materials (if you are supply chain professionals or enthusiasts). This post will be the first chapter summarising and discussing the modules of the SCLM course. 🛳 Transport Techniques and Management module (led by Nishal Samarasekera) 📝 Freight Transport Modes Some freight modes are provided to operate and serve the business/industry, such as maritime/sea, air, road/truck, rail, and pipeline (even cloud service and Internet of Things are used to enable digital business distribution). Most business owners and operators that market tangible products utilise combined freight modes to fulfil customer orders. Each mode has different and specific advantages, thus it is essential to assess and determine the most effective and efficient one to optimise the transport activity. 📝 Outsourcing Option in Transportation One of the strategic decisions in logistics or transportation planning is in-house vs outsourcing. Decision making and assessment process must consider cost, service availability, expertise, resources, and capital/investment aspects. Before outsourcing to a logistics service provider, the business owner or operator needs to analyse and ensure the business requirements, supply chain strategy, supplier benchmarking and selection, and contract negotiation. The benefits of in-house or outsourcing must suit and support the business's needs and operations. 📝 Impacts on Environment Freight transportation can affect the environment through emissions/pollution, congestion, accidents, waste, and other impacts. Choosing the freight mode in the current trend must also consider and check the carbon footprint produced. Schools and trusts could see significant increases in operational capacity by adopting operational excellence approaches increasingly seen in the commercial world and other parts of the public sector. That’s according to a new in-depth report commissioned by the Institute of School Business Leadership (ISBL), supported by the Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) International. The research reveals that just 20% of trusts have currently adopted the ‘OpEx’ approach. This creates a “game-changing opportunity for the vast majority of trusts and the wider sector” says ISBL CEO Stephen Morales. “OpEx is the natural next step in the sector’s improvement journey,” he added. “At its basic level, OpEx is about reflecting on what we do and asking ourselves the question: are there incremental improvements that can be made? OpEx is a major opportunity to improve if schools and trusts accept that there is an improvement journey to go on,” he said. Drawing on examples from both the public and private sectors, the report highlights how applying business principles to education—such as treating teachers and pupils as customers—can enhance key functions like finance, HR, technology, and estate management. The study emphasises the importance of consistent leadership and a willingness to tackle old problems with fresh perspectives. OpEx is described as a cultural transformation that enables organisations to perform optimally by reducing and even eliminating waste from a range of tasks and processes over time. Schools adopting these approaches could see game-changing results, but only 20% of trusts have embraced OpEx. This represents a massive opportunity for the sector.
