BCN FinTech’s Post

🚀 Barcelona FinTech News Round-Up 🚀 The past month has been action-packed in Barcelona’s fintech ecosystem! Here are the top 5 stories making waves from Oct 25 to Nov 21 2024: 1️⃣ SeQura Secures €410M to Expand Globally Barcelona-based BNPL leader SeQura has raised €410M in funding from Citi, M&G Investments, Svea Bank, and Chenavari Investment Managers to fuel its expansion into the US, UK, and Germany. 🌍 Being profitable since 2017 probably helped secure the round in what is still a rather slow startup investment climate. CFO Markus Jennemyr shared, “This funding allows us to continue to innovate and scale profitably.” And CEO David Bäckström adds: “We are entering a stage of aggressive growth and need this capital to expand our structure and finance our customers with small loans.” [Translated]. SeQura expects to reach €96M in revenue this year—a 54% increase over 2023. A huge win for Barcelona’s e-commerce fintech sector! 💳 2️⃣ Spain Leads EU in Instant Cross-Border Payments Spanish banks are the first in the EU to adopt the European Payment Council’s OCT Inst scheme, enabling instant cross-currency payments. BBVA, CaixaBank, and Santander were key players in the trials. As 🚀 Mario Manzieri points out, this makes "Spain's role in new banking ideas stronger and helps it compete better in the global payments industry." 3️⃣ ID Finance Named 'Most Disruptive Fintech' ID Finance won the prestigious award at the Financial Innovation Awards (#FIA24) for its groundbreaking financial wellbeing app, Plazo. Recognized for its contributions to financial inclusivity and innovation, this accolade further cements Barcelona as a hub for fintech disruption. 🎉👏 4️⃣ Payflow Wins Social & Tech Sustainability Award Payflow (YC S21) has been recognized at the ISS Facility Services España Awards for its impact on workplace sustainability and innovation! 🌱📱 The award celebrates Payflow’s efforts to improve financial wellbeing by giving employees flexible access to their salaries. Payflow's Gregorio Alarcón Bermejo and Pablo Babé Alonso-Cortés share: "We believe in financial wellbeing, which positively impacts individuals and, in turn, companies.” 5️⃣ inbestMe Launches Goal Simulator Roboadvisor inbestMe has introduced a new financial planning tool, the Goal Simulator. Designed to help users visualize their financial futures with Monte Carlo simulations, the tool supports smarter, goal-driven investment strategies. 🧠📊 CEO Jordi Mercader adds, “This empowers our clients to take control of their financial journeys.” These achievements highlight Barcelona’s fintech ecosystem as a driving force in innovation and global impact. 🙌 Great news! The SeQura story is really great news, as not only do they get the extra funding needed to expand, they also already have a proven, successful and most importantly profitable business model! Good luck with the expansion & we hope to learn from you on our BCN FinTech stage next year :)
