*Call out to all Engineers* Just remember the following; 1. Nothing gets built without you. 2. Contrary to popular culture Engineers are the coolest of all professions. 3. Without Engineers no other profession has any need to exist, and cannot do any of their work without you. 4. Lawyers, Accountants and any other pointless (feel free to add your own in the comments) professions are social constructs they do not construct anything. (I didn't add Recruiters because it's not a profession). 5. If you need a 5. You aren't an Engineer and are still reading because you have nothing to do. In the....

Someone mentioned at the DOT Roundtable (Construction) that it's hard to hire highway engineers with computer knowledge, or computer guys with engineering knowledge. As someone in this niche, I recognize that it's a small hiring pool. Part of the challenge for the industry is that such knowledge overlaps enough with the software industry... So salaries must be competitive, not merely against other civil engineering positions, but against Silicon Valley and software firms globally. State government in general has a hard time providing offers that are competitive versus private sector for civil engineers, let alone trying to compete with the private sector for software development. This may require more contracting out, and budgeting even more money to manage the contracts. #iHeep

Those who work in construction know this truth: Careers in construction are personally, professionally, and financially rewarding, and the industry is constantly evolving to stay on the cutting edge of technology and meet the ever-changing needs of communities. And fortunately, the public perception of the industry has undergone a makeover in recent years: Gen Z is even being called “the toolbelt generation” by publications like the Wall Street Journal and NPR, as they begin to reassess traditional wisdom about the unmatched value of a four-year degree. But there’s still work to be done. In order to continue the growing trend of young people entering the trades in larger numbers, companies should understand two things: What does the new generation of workers need to know about careers in construction, and what’s the best way to reach them? https://lnkd.in/enkjZDze Authored by Michael Jones, Market Leader #kimmel #careersinconstructionmonth #cicm #careeradvice

I thought this article was a great read! We spend so much time speaking with our clients about the labor shortage in construction, and just how hard it can be to hire skilled new employees. One of the more interesting points to me was the view of how our ‘traditional’ education system is essentially discouraging young professionals from considering careers in construction and trade contracting. As someone who originally started out as an electrician, I cannot speak enough to how many different skills and values I absorbed during my earlier professional days. I wouldn’t trade that time for anything, and without a doubt, it has played a huge part in helping shape me into who I am today. As the article mentions, there are still plenty of reasons why young adults should at least consider a career in the skilled trades. I think the main question construction companies are facing today is how to make those young professionals aware of these benefits. I’d love to hear from you all - How do you think construction companies should go about marketing these benefits to potential employees? https://lnkd.in/eiRR3vsa

Ever found yourself staring at a blank screen, struggling to find the words to describe your own achievements or professional journey? Trust me, you're not alone! As a recruiter specializing in Civil and Structural Engineers, I can't tell you how often I hear about imposter syndrome when it comes to showcasing skills and experiences. One piece of advice I often give is to think about your proudest moments in your career. These moments provide a sincere snapshot of your abilities and impact. For instance, did you know that civil engineering roles in the UK are expected to see a growth of 3.9% by 2028? (source: UK Govt Office for National Statistics). Sharing a significant project where you contributed can resonate with this growing demand and highlight your expertise. Don't underestimate the power of peer collaboration either. A simple recommendation or endorsement from a colleague can add immense value to your profile. So next time you're feeling stumped, remember: your story is unique, and sharing it authentically can open doors you never imagined. #CivilEngineering #CareerGrowth #RecruitmentInsights
