Geographical and organised #proximity reveal all their potential when dealing with #CircularEconomy This is my fourth paper on #proximity in Regional Studies Journal !!!! This brand new one has been written with my cherished co-authors Sébastien BOURDIN, Marie-France Vernier, Nabila Arfaoui and Linh Chi Vo. The study is based on an original survey of 1000 firms in the chemistry sector in France.

20 March 2024, Brussels: the European Commission 🇪🇺 has adopted and presented today its strategy: "Building the future with nature: Boosting Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing in the EU", leveraging Europe's clear scientific edge in biotech, and turn this into commercial successes. ▶️Three priorities have been identified: awareness building , financing and regulation. 🌳A strong emphasis is placed on the crucial contribution of the forest-based and wood industries: 🪵 Recognising that the EU has a strong domestic supply of renewable raw materials, such as wood. 🪵 In the case of biomanufacturing, the forest sector offers sustainably produced, renewable and recyclable raw materials that can be used for high value innovative products, such as batteries or healthcare and pharmaceuticals applications (e.g. nanocellulose-based wound dressings). 🪵 Furthermore, wood can be used to replace fossil-based or non-renewable materials, for example, in the production of construction materials and textiles and to substitute chemicals. 🪵 Biorefineries can nowadays transform wood into innovative high value-added products in several sectors: biochemicals, insulation foams, bio composites, engineered foams, batteries, etc. 🪵 The European Commission in its “Annual Union Work Programme for European Standardisation“ for 2024 (https://lnkd.in/eKsFZbMe) has indicated its intention to request the European standardisation organisations (CEN, CENELEC) to develop and revise standardisation deliverables on biomaterials, bio-based and wood-derived products. 🪵 Bio-based value chains would benefit from a deeper integration of primary producers (e.g. farmers and foresters) as they are at the beginning of most bio-based value chains. 🌳 Biotech with its biomaterials have tremendous potential to transform health care, to feed the world, to address climate change, to boost jobs and prosperity with biomanufacturing. TNO is developing an innovative Decision Support System to help companies to develop products that are Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD). TNO's SSbD approach: The innovation approach aims to empower companies to take informed decisions based on the integration of health, safety, sustainability, functionality and cost impacts early in the innovation process. 1. Defining design criteria: For the intended use of the chemical, material or product 2. Quick screening: On all SSbD aspects (health, safety, sustainability, functionality and cost) within the SSbD decision support tool based on available information, data and modeling 3. Visualisation: Integration of impact on SSbD aspects and visualisation of trade-offs 4. Decision making: Based on transparent visualisation and scenario testing. If needed, more detailed evaluation of one or more SSbD aspects can be performed e.g. by additional data gathering, (in vitro) testing, advanced modeling to reduce uncertainties and support decision making Great work by Wouter Fransman and Hedwig Braakhuis.
