👏 I am very proud to announce that Cefic’s "Safe and Sustainable-by-Design: A guidance to unleash the transformative power of #innovation" is out: a big milestone and again a clear indication of the chemical industry’s commitment to a sustainable future!   Cefic’s guidance on SSbD lays out a practical approach, designed by innovators for innovators, to innovate and design with safety and #sustainability in mind from the very beginning. It’s an important tool that supports companies in understanding, testing, and implementing SSbD principles.   I recommend companies to test our SSbD guidance to guide their innovation process with respect to safety and sustainability (while keeping the respective performance and competitiveness in mind as well)   A huge thanks to everyone who made this guidance happen! Research & Innovation Within Chemical Companies: SAFE AND SUSTAINABLE- BY-DESIGN (#SSbD) A GUIDANCE TO UNLEASH THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF INNOVATION In recent years, the #chemicalsindustry has scaled up its activities to embed state-of-the-art #SafeandSustainablebyDesign principles into its innovation processes. ➡️ Cefic and its members have defined Safe and Sustainable-by-Design (#SSbD) as an iterative process guiding innovation and the placement on the market of new #chemicals, #materials, #products, #processes and #services that are safe, and deliver environmental, societal, and/or economical value through their applications. ‼️Cefic’s new publication, ‘Safe and Sustainable by-Design: A Guidance to Unleash the Transformative Power of Innovation”, offers detailed, actionable advice to integrate these principles across the entire research and innovation lifecycle. ➡️ The guidance outlines specific activities for different phases of industrial #ResearchandDevelopment (R&D). ➡️ The new guidance brings views from both the industry and organisations such as the European Commission and its Joint Research Centre (JRC), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). ‼️The goal is to serve as a valuable guide for the chemical sector and value chains toward a #sustainable, #circular, and #inclusiveeconomy by 2050. It aims to empower stakeholders to more efficiently apply #SSbDprinciples throughout the #innovationlifecycle. 💠 Scope To identify relevant dimensions for #safety and #sustainability, we could rely on the experience of chemical companies implementing the framework for #PortfolioSustainabilityAssessment, developed and kept up to date by pioneering companies under the umbrella of the #WBCSD (The #WorldBusinessCouncilforSustainableDevelopment, brings together transformational organizations to form a global community that shifts the systems they work within towards a better future). ‼️ In this methodology for the #chemicalindustry, the following “signals” need to be assessed e.g., ✅ the chemical hazards and exposure across the life cycle, ✅ anticipated regulatory trends, ✅sustainability ambitions along the value chain, ✅authoritative ecolabels, ✅ sustainability related certification and standards, ✅environmental and social performance across the life cycle compared to alternative solutions. Other “signals” are recommended to be assessed, the sustainable value creation, the Sustainable Development Goals and the company’s internal guidelines & objectives.
