This Sunday, April 28, is the National Day of Mourning, a day to remember and acknowledge all those who have lost their lives or been impacted by workplace injuries and illnesses. April 28th reminds us how important safety is within the workplace. International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) represents workers in various sectors that are not without danger and risk. The IBEW was founded during a critical time in history when electrical infrastructure was booming, yet the lives of many line workers were lost. The mortality rate of linemen during the late 1800s was estimated to be one out of every two men hired. The dangers and risks in the sectors we represent are embedded in our roots and remain the driving force of our values. Ultimately, we wish to see all workers return to their loved ones unharmed. **To our IBEW Family and the collective workforce: we urge you to remain vigilant at work.** Honour the lives of those lost and the families that miss them deeply by prioritizing safety each time you set foot on site. Ensure your training is updated regularly, wear your PPE, and follow all safety protocols - no matter how often you've done the job. Most of all, use your voice: report unsafe sites and refuse hazardous work until the proper safety measures have been implemented. Let's all play an active role in ensuring workplace safety. In the words of IBEW Local 2230 Business Manager James Martin, "...don't get complacent when doing your jobs. The work we do is dangerous."
Business Manager / Financial Secretary IBEW 2330 at International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW)
On April 28, the National Day of Mourning, we remember the workers we lost to workplace injuries or illnesses. Please take a moment to remember these people. Please be vigilant and don't get complacent when doing your jobs. The work we do is dangerous.

It's important to take time to reflect on our safety practices, both individually and as teams. Let’s take this opportunity to pause, reflect, and recommit ourselves to preventing injuries and fatalities. Stay vigilant, stay safe. #SafetyMatters #CommitToSafety #HealthAndSafety #Prevention
IHSA has learned of multiple workplace fatalities this week in Ontario. One workplace fatality at any time is one too many, regardless of the sector, industry, or occupation. Please pause all work for a safety moment and re-establish a commitment to the prevention of injuries, illnesses, and fatalities.
