16 days, countless stories, and a simple truth: 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲. Today marks the closing day of the 𝟭𝟲 𝗗𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, a campaign that has highlighted the urgent need to end violence against women and girls worldwide. Over the past 16 days, I’ve tried to share some alarming facts and important insights to raise awareness about this critical issue. But the work doesn’t end here. Awareness is just the first step - what matters now is turning it into meaningful action, advocacy, and lasting change. Together, we can create a future free from violence. This week, we are spotlighting different resources in our toolbox that evidences why we are working as faith actors for #GenderJustice on #TheRoad2Equality. “Faith-based actors (such as formal and informal faith-based leaders and organizations) and traditional actors (such as chiefs, traditional healers, elders and mothers-in-law) are increasingly recognized as key to preventing violence against women and girls and crucial to realizing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 5... These actors can promote beliefs, norms and practices that support and enable prevention of violence against women and girls, but they can also encourage and legitimize certain forms of violence. Today, November 25, marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women—a day to raise awareness and stand united against a global issue that affects millions of women and girls. Violence against women takes many forms: physical, emotional, economic, and social. It happens in homes, workplaces, schools, and public spaces. But today, we remember that it doesn't have to continue. Together, we can break the cycle. At HIWA (Hope Initiative for Women in Africa), we are committed to empowering women, ending gender-based violence, and creating a world where women can live free from fear, violence, and discrimination. Together, we can make a difference. We must move beyond awareness to action. Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we must recognize how conflicts in the Middle East deepen the suffering of women and girls. War amplifies gender-based violence, forcing women into unsafe environments with limited resources and protection. Yet, women are not just victims, they are resilient agents of change. Across the region, they are mobilizing to advocate for peace, justice, and equality despite immense challenges. With an alarming 736 million women—or nearly one in three—experiencing physical and/or sexual violence at some point in their lives, the implications for sustainable development, social justice, and environmental protection are profound. This issue not only hinders women’s rights and equality but also poses significant barriers to achieving the Global Goals, particularly Goal 5, which aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. The scope of violence against women Violence against women and girls (VAWG) manifests in various forms, including intimate partner violence, sexual harassment, and human trafficking. The United Nations defines violence against women as any act of gender-based violence resulting in, or likely to result in, physical, sexual, or psychological harm. Such violence severely impacts women's health, educational attainment, and economic opportunities, thereby perpetuating economic inequality. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the consequences of VAWG are not only physical; they also include significant psychological trauma and reproductive health issues. Research indicates that women who experience intimate partner violence are more likely to suffer from mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety. Furthermore, these adverse effects are exacerbated in certain vulnerable groups, including young girls, older women, and those identifying as lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or intersex. This underscores the need for targeted interventions that consider the unique challenges faced by these demographics. The impact on education and employment Statistics reveal that early educational disadvantages often lead to restricted access to higher education, significantly affecting women’s participation in the labour market. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) reports that every additional year of schooling for girls can increase their future income by up to 20%. However, violence against women directly correlates with educational dropouts, as many girls are forced to leave school due to abuse or the fear of violence. This not only hampers their individual growth but also stifles national economic development. Eliminating violence is not just a women’s issue; it is a human issue that demands collective action. What can we do? 1. Educate and Empower: Awareness is the first step. Let's teach boys and girls the value of respect and equality. Let's empower women to know their rights and access the resources they need to thrive. 2. Speak Out: Silence enables abuse to persist. If you see something, say something. Use your voice to advocate for survivors and demand accountability for perpetrators. 3. Support Survivors: Extend compassion to those affected by violence. Provide safe spaces where they can heal and rebuild their lives. 4. Challenge Norms: Break the harmful stereotypes and cultural practices that perpetuate gender inequality. Promote policies that protect women and uplift their voices. This year marks 25 years since the international community first designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in honour of the Mirabel sisters – commemorating their lifelong resistance and brutal assassination by the state in 1960. In 2024, we know all too well that women and girls continue to be murdered because of their gender. So far in Australia, over 80 women have already been killed this year as a result of gender-based violence. That’s why days like IDEVAWG matter so much – they are important moments in time to bring our voices together and draw attention to the alarming rates of gender-based violence that persist in our communities. In addition to being an important day for women's rights activists, #IDEVAW also marks the start of the global #16DaysOfActivism campaign. This day serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive violence that women and girls around the world endure daily.
