Are local dual-purpose cattle breeds still valuable in mountain agriculture. We from Freie Universität Bozen think so. Therefore, we tried to provide a detailed phenotypic characterization of milk composition of local-dual purpose breeds to highlight their specificity and value for future breeding. Its symbol is \(the greek letter sigma\) The formula is easy: it is the square root of the Variance. So now you ask, "What is the Variance?" Variance The Variance is defined as: The average of the squared differences from the Mean. To calculate the variance follow these steps: Work out the Mean \(the simple average of the numbers\) Then for each number: subtract the Mean and square the result \(the squared difference\). Great success for the EAAP - European Federation of Animal Science congress ! About 2,000 participants attended the 98 different sessions in Florence, Italy. As a breeding organisation of Endangered Animal Breeds, check out the results of these three sessions : - Breeding scheme optimization: balancing breeding goal(s), genetic progress and diversity (session 2) - Breeding schemes for development of small populations (session 31), with a EURC EAB chair -The role of breeding and genetics in the sustainable transformation of the livestock sector (session 58), with FAO chairs. The congress was an opportunity to present the survey results about the implementation of Regulation (EU) 2016/1012 concerning endangered breeds by the EURC EAB and a tool under developpement by the consortium, a generic measure of genetic relatedness of populations. #breedingorganisation #EURCEAB #ERFP
