🚨 New Publication Alert! 🚨 I am excited to share my latest review published in #Animal (August’s highlighted article ): 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗶𝗴𝘀: 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 🐷🌿 This comprehensive review dives into the genetic parameters of nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in pigs. The findings reveal that NUE has significant heritability, presenting promising opportunities for genetic improvement. Key insights: • The genetic correlation with production traits is low, ensuring selective breeding is a safe approach. • NUE has a highly polygenic genetic architecture, making it feasible yet challenging to breed pigs with higher NUE. • Enhanced efforts in high-throughput phenotyping and genome annotation are crucial for future progress. Demand for sustainable food production is increasing with a growing population, and environmental changes are pushing plant breeding approaches to develop variants with greater resilience and broader adaptation. Genomic selection can aid and accelerate breeding efforts by leveraging genomic information as well as other genotypic, phenotypic, multi-omic and environmental sources that drive trait variability. Microfluidics-based genomic analysis advances the development of data-driven approaches, expanding the information that can be generated to increase genetic gain in stress-prone environments. A team of UTA biologists led by Matt Fujita and Corey Roelke has begun a project to sample the DNA of the Dixon’s whiptail lizard and the common checkered whiptail. Until now, researchers have been unable to tell if the animals are the same genetically. If they prove to be different species, then the Dixon’s whiptail, which is extremely rare, may be eligible for protections as an endangered species.
