Did you know about the NGS method? Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) is a molecular biology method developed to study genetic variations in organisms deeply and quickly. So, what is the role of the NGS method in the field of aquaculture? Check out this post to learn more! #NGS #NextGenerationSequencing #aquaculture #biomolecular

💬 "Recent advances in #sequencingtechnology and a reduction in sequencing costs mean we now have the opportunity to generate haplotype-aware assemblies for non-model organisms. For orphan crops – my area of work - this represents an invaluable resource for improved breeding." For the latest in our technical blogs, Postdoctoral Researcher Camilla Ryan, walks you through a manual curation technique for a chromosome-level and haplotype-aware assembly, for model or non-model organisms. 🧬 https://okt.to/L7C5Fg #bioinformatics #howto #genes #genomics #computationalbiology

Hey everyone! Excited to share our research poster on mitochondrial DNA inheritance in bivalves, presented today at the Ruppin Academic Center. Our team, Tsoor Hartov, Matan Maimony, Ran Eisenberg, and I, under the guidance of Prof. Yaron Tikochinski, examined the phenomenon of Doubly Uniparental Inheritance (DUI) in over 100 bivalve species. Through R. Philippinarum 🦪, we explored mechanisms and implications of DUI and sex-dependent heteroplasmy, revealing insights into genetic diversity and mutation dynamics. Our findings highlight unique evolutionary pathways for male and female bivalves, shedding light on potential commercial applications in aquaculture. Stay tuned for our detailed article! 🧬 #Research #Genetics #Bivalves #Aquaculture

🌊🦪Dive into the wonders of DUI (Doubly Uniparental Inheritance). We often think mitochondrial DNA is solely inherited from the mother, but clams like Ruditapes philippinarum (Manila clam) and more bivalve species teach us that fathers play a crucial role too! 🦪🔬 This unique genetic inheritance and bottlenecks leads to a mind-blowing scenario: DUI clams of different species can be more genetically similar to each other than to the opposite gender of their own species! It’s a reminder of how much more there is to explore and discover in the world of marine biology. 🌊✨ In short, the presentation of the poster was very experiential and fun thanks to the amazing team members and our supervisor Professor Yaron Tikochinski Stay curious and keep exploring! #MarineBiology #Genetics #DUI #ScienceExploration

A team of UTA biologists led by Matt Fujita and Corey Roelke has begun a project to sample the DNA of the Dixon’s whiptail lizard and the common checkered whiptail. Until now, researchers have been unable to tell if the animals are the same genetically. If they prove to be different species, then the Dixon’s whiptail, which is extremely rare, may be eligible for protections as an endangered species. 🎉New publication🎉 I am excited to share that my latest publication, was released this August. The article has been published in Poultry Science, an American journal with a D1 ranking and an impact factor of 3.8. This research represents the largest dataset used to date to study genetic diversity in pigeons within the Carpathian Basin and Iraq. Additionally, it is the first time such analyses have been conducted on the Iraqi pigeon breeds we examined (Iraqi Raabi and Red pigeon). It has been a long journey, but a highly rewarding one, providing significant genetical insights into these large pigeon breeds.
