In my role as a federal health management consultant, I witness the collaboration between federal agencies delivering cancer care. But even more inspiring are the stories of patients, families, caregivers, and advocates whose lives have been impacted by government investment in cancer research across all stages. #cancer #innovation #research

As part of Cancer: Project Zero, we are excited to bring to you the Cancer: Project Zero essay collection - ten articles from oncology leaders, analysing the different approaches to cancer care that can help make our ambition of zero deaths from cancer a reality. In her essay, Anna Jewell, Chair of the Less Survivable Cancers Taskforce, touches on the inequality in progress for different cancer types. For cancers where fewer than one in five people are alive five years after diagnosis – such as brain, lung, stomach, oesophagus, and pancreatic cancers - the challenge of zero deaths from cancer may seem an impossible one. There is significant progress that needs to be made to make all cancers survivable and, ensuring all stakeholders are aligned on the Cancer: Project Zero journey. I recently came across a thought-provoking campaign from the Cancer charity Prost8, highlighting the importance of raising awareness about the availability of a simple blood test for prostate cancer. It got me thinking about the advancements in breast cancer testing for women. * https://lnkd.in/eX9n44Np While new technologies for breast cancer, such as advanced mammograms, are being developed for more precise diagnosis, they still pose discomfort and pain for women. It's a stark contrast to the more comfortable testing methods now available for prostate cancer. * https://lnkd.in/edrsvhcp This raises an important question: Why are the medical and scientific communities not prioritizing the reduction of women's discomfort during cancer testing? Until when will women's pain be ignored in the pursuit of better diagnostics? Let's keep the conversation going and advocate for equitable and comfortable cancer testing for all. #CancerAwareness #HealthEquality #MedicalAdvancements

💜 Research Matters. World #StatisticsDay. The impact #BreastCancerResearch is making in the world is truly eye opening. - Breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women, except for skin cancers.* - In 2024, an estimated 310,720 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the U.S., as well as 56,500 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer. - The 5-year relative survival rate in the U.S. of localized (early stage) breast cancer is 99%.* This is why regular screenings are so important. - Breast cancer death rates have slowly decreased since 1989, for an overall decline of 43% through 2020. This is in part due to better screening and early detection efforts, increased awareness and continually improving treatment options.* Since 2006 the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation has raised millions of dollars with 100% of the monies raised going directly to research grants to clinical and preclinical fellowships in high impact, breast cancer therapeutic research areas. 💜 We ARE making a difference. * https://lnkd.in/dSMYG_Ch Learn more about Our Strength...
