Today in Abuja, the #President of Nigerian Cancer Society, Dr Adamu Alhassan Umar spoke at the Gatefield Health Summit—Beyond65, on the critical issue of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and strategies to improve health outcomes across Sub-Saharan Africa. Non-communicable diseases are silent but deadly— cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and others are deeply interconnected. Once diagnosed with one, the risk of developing another increases significantly. It's a reminder that our health choices and policies need to address the full scope of these chronic conditions. One key point is that policies have a crucial role in combating NCDs. We need to not only amplify our advocacy for healthy living but also ensure that policies are implemented to support better health practices and access to care. In a country like Nigeria, where nearly 80% of healthcare expenses are out-of-pocket, the importance of shifting towards prevention through lifestyle changes and policy enforcement cannot be overstated. Dr. Adamu stressed “We are what we eat”. Nigerians have up to 80% of individuals paying for health care out of pocket. We should amplify our voices to advocate for positive and healthy living as well as follow up with the implementation of policies. He then advocated the right policies and their implementation in combating NCS and in his words, “Policies have a great role to play in combating NCDs”. Let's continue to raise our voices for healthier, more sustainable communities. #GatefieldHealthSummit #NigerianCancerSociety #HealthSummit #NCDs #HealthcarePolicy #HealthyLiving #AfricaHealth #PublicHealth
