Government data suggests most schools and colleges have identified a cyber-security breach in the past year. BBC News reported that during a ransomware attack, hackers block access to a school's computer records, including sensitive personal data, and demand money while threatening to publish them online. Often the attacks are committed by organized criminal gangs based in foreign countries. One such attack, identified by the BBC in the south-west of England at the start of last year, saw hackers steal and publish several highly confidential documents, including information about children with special educational needs, child passport scans and staff contract details. Summer is officially over, and pupils are back to school. As we have seen in the news over the last year, there is a continuing surge in cyber-attacks targeting UK schools, both in frequency and complexity. In 2023, 347 cyber incidents were reported in the education and childcare sector - an increase of 55% on 2022 (BBC report). That’s why it is important for educational institutions, parents and students to take cybersecurity seriously and learn how to protect themselves against a cyberattack. And, many attacks are preventable. PCA can help understand the threats schools face, whilst giving them the chance to take action and minimise the damage an attack could cause.
