At the end of May, I had the chance to give my first talk , "How to Study the Impact of a Museum: The Case of the MfN," at the FB3 #KnowledgeLab at the #MuseumFürNaturkunde Berlin. My talk focused on three key points about #impact: 1️⃣ How do we think about the transformative a.k.a. political change in the museums? How do we imagine the future change? To what extent are we able to anticipate the path to this change? 2️⃣ What are the conceptual frameworks underlying the current participatory research practices and impact thinking? How are they applied in practice? I focused specifically on the #TheoryOfChange, but there are other tools, including #ParticipatoryActionResearch and #DesignThinking 3️⃣ The diversity of how different projects understand and practice participation, which is reflected in the scholarship, is often due to the discrepancy between the big goals of the projects and the technicalities and mechanics of evaluation techniques. Here are my personal takeaways 💡 💡 💡 : 💠 We need to further refine our analytical imagination and tools about impact as operating at the different levels: the level of activity, the level of institution, the level of society. 💠 We need more in-depth conversations between participation researchers and practitioners to better understand each other's languages, and to identify gaps, where research could highlight boundaries and barriers to productive collaboration and change. 💠 Importantly, this does not mean that we need to agree on methodologies or tools, but rather that we have a chance to develop a conceptual conversation about change. Thank you for the great discussion! Konstantin S. Kiprijanov, Christian Reichel, Sophie Ehrmanntraut, Sabrina Kirschke, Dr Ana I. Faustino, Mhairi Stewart, Victoria Shennan

This past half a year the Ars Electronica Futurelab was closely collaborating with the new IT:U- Interdisciplinary Transformation University Austria for their pilot semester the FOUNDING LAB. IT:U aims to tackle the topic of digital transformation from an interdisciplinary and international perspective. The FOUNDING LAB is a collaborative prototype with which the IT:U and Ars Electronica want to identify and develop new methods and formats for shaping a pioneering university. As part of the Futurelab team that was aiding the Founding Lab project, I was involved in organizing six Deep Dive Talks. Six lectures given by experts from different fields, who all deal with the topics of Art, Technology, and Society in one way or another. Curating these speakers was a fun challenge and I am proud of the selection we managed to obtain! You can find all the talks here: https://lnkd.in/drGwqBAf The speakers were as follows: dr. Ryan Wittingslow talking about his book 'What Art Does: Using Philosophy of Technology to Talk about Art' Tech visionary Oscar Ekponimo, who is active as an entrepreneur aiming to utilize digital transformation to address food security in Africa. dr. Tega Brain, Associate Professor at NYU who is active as an artist working on the interface of ecology, data, automation, and infrastructure. Go S., CTO of Godot Inc, an AI startup that aims to contribute to the furthering of an inclusive society. Marta Peirano, a Spanish journalist, researcher, and author who is specialized in the relationship between technology and power. and my dear coworker Yoko Shimizu, who is sharing her work as an artist, and the type of work we do at the Ars Electronica Futurelab If any of you are interested in these topics or these talks, I can highly recommend checking out any of the talks!

interesting report about the potential of art+science in applied context
The European Commission #JointResearchCentre recently published "The Art + Science + Policy Nexus". Exploring the intersection of art, science, and policy, this scoping study highlights how art-science initiatives influence policy and policymaking through diverse channels like briefs, events, and exhibitions. However, it notes a gap in policymaker involvement in the conception of these projects. Proposing a preliminary typology based on knowledge flow, the study suggests further research into the impact of these interdisciplinary collaborations on policy and societal challenges, urging a deeper look into the long-term effects of art-science-policy engagement. In Bioindustry 4.0 we will also invite an artist to collaborate and engage with the science and research infrastructures involved. A call for proposals will be published later this year in collaboratin with deCYPher! Download full report: https://lnkd.in/dvArVUdB

“Where science meets fiction” is the motto of today at the Campus Stadtmitte of the #UniversityofStuttgart. At the #NextFrontiers Congress 2024, creative people from science and business meet science fiction authors and science journalists. 🤔Where is the undiscovered land? 💡Where can we find the solutions for a better future? 🔎And is science fiction actually still up to date? In his opening address, Prof. Peter Middendorf stated that science also requires imagination to pose new research questions and creativity to develop suitable methods and overcome setbacks. For the University of Stuttgart, the vision of “Intelligent Systems To Benefit Society” is always a priority. Michael Kaiser from the Wirtschaftsförderung Region Stuttgart GmbH (WRS) emphasized that companies do not only operate in the present, but are always on the lookout for future opportunities. A wide range of presentations and panels will focus on topics such as #ArtificialIntelligence, #SyntheticBiology / GreenGeneTechnology and #Aerospace. Next Frontiers – Applied Fiction Days is organized by #NextFrontiersgUG in cooperation with the Wirtschaftsförderung Region Stuttgart GmbH (WRS) and the IZKT – Internationales Zentrum für Kultur- und Technikforschung der Universität Stuttgart. Funded by the Cultural Office of the Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart. Supported by the MFG Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg mbH. #nextfrontiers #congress #stuttgart #science #sciencefiction #future #science #economy #appliedfiction #sciencecommunication

🌟 🔭 Reflecting on Berlin Science Week 2024: A Hub of Innovation and Dialogue 🧪 🌟 Looking at this year's Berlin Science Week, it's inspiring to see how the festival serves as a vibrant platform for scientific exchange and societal engagement. Two events I attended were held at Holzmarkt and WZB, each contributing uniquely to the festival's theme of "Common Ground." Circular Economy (CE) by INAM at Holzmarkt: This event was a beacon of innovation, showcasing how new materials and technologies are paving the way for a sustainable future. The discussions highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing the CE, emphasizing the need for a "value change" alongside the value chain. Glad to have met movers in this space, Oliver Hasse and Barbora Balcarova, who shared their insights on what's up next in the scene of CE and Open Innovation. I also appreciate learning from IHK Berlin's Andreas Kubala that #digitalization and related infrastructure is a real need according to 66% of their survey's respondents. "Bedrohte Wissenschaft" at Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin fuer Sozialforschung (WZB): This event tackled the pressing issue of threats to scientific freedom and the role of science in bridging societal divides. It was a call to action for participants to explore their beliefs and engage in meaningful dialogue, with quite a few, even poignant, questions raised by the audience. Check out the upcoming Berlin Science Week events until the 10th November via https://lnkd.in/ezg8ehum Let's continue to build on these conversations and work towards a future where science serves as a unifying force in our society ... and perhaps, we'll have a chat (in person) soon! #BerlinScienceWeek #CircularEconomy #ScienceCommunication #Innovation #Sustainability

Last week, we were at the #Tropentag conference, taking part in the side event Art in Science. It was interesting to see an initiative on the interception between art and science and see that there is still a way to go! We saw so much potential. Sometimes it can be thought that art and science belong to different worlds. But we can borrow elements from art to make science more accessible to others. Communicating scientific knowledge in an attractive, insightful, and accurate way 1. awakens interest in observing closely 2. encourages the engagement of our audience, and 3. facilitate the understanding of complex ideas For both, those doing science and those who are not involved in the scientific process but need to understand these scientific findings for decision-making. Did you visit the exhibition? What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments. ATSAF e.V.

I recently read a book shedding light on the secret lives of great artists, mostly from the 1800s, many of whom studied at the renowned art school in Paris. The book delves into the turbulent experiences these artists faced due to wars, diseases, and challenging living conditions. Despite the hardships, these struggles added value to art, albeit at the cost of personal suffering. This era birthed many famous artists and invaluable art pieces. However, the 19th century marked a pivotal shift with the rise of science as a profession. The evolution of science brought about transformative changes, enhancing cities, eradicating diseases, and revolutionizing industries. It was a crucial period characterized by continuous scientific discoveries that shaped a new world. This post serves as a reminder of the profound importance of science in our lives and the multitude of benefits it continues to bestow upon society. The evolution of science has not only enriched our understanding of the world but has also paved the way for countless advancements that have significantly improved our quality of life. #Science #Innovation #Artists #History #Progress
