Litchi, rich in nutrients, has a short shelf life due to rapid browning at room temperature. This study explored the effects of hypobaric storage combined with fumigation on post-harvest litchi quality. Litchi samples were divided into four groups with humidification levels of 0%, 2%, 3%, and 5%. Pressure and temperature changes in the hypobaric chamber were simulated and verified experimentally, with thermocouples measuring surface and center temperatures. Results showed that at 3% humidification, temperature dropped most rapidly, with the surface and center reaching 277.15 K and 283.15 K, respectively, minimizing the time for hypobaric fumigation and pre-cooling to achieve uniform temperature. 🦠Phages, viruses that prey on bacteria, are too small to see without an electron microscope 🔬. But what if we could witness their abilities by illustrating the effects✨? I'm doing an experiment 🥼 that aims to see if phages lurking in environmental samples 🌱 can influence yogurt cultures. Here's the plan 🧠: 1. We'll split a yogurt culture into two jars: a control and a test. 2. In the control, we'll mix distilled water. In the test, we'll introduce some soil that might harbor phages, also mixed in distilled water. 3. Both jars will rest at room temperature for 24-48 hours. The big question: will the jar with the soil sample show any signs different from the control? A change in thickness, texture, or acidity could signal phage activity 🦠! I am happy to share with you the results of our latest experiment that investigated new substrate formulations for growing shiitake mushroom (Lentinula edodes). Mixing two types of sawdust, such as oak and eucalyptus could ameliorate shiitake yield.

The #ISTA Moisture and Seed Storage Committees invite laboratories to participate in a questionnaire about the use of equilibrium relative humidity measurements for determining the moisture status of seeds. Determination of seed equilibrium relative humidity (eRH) – also known as water activity (aw), where eRH = aw x 100 – is widely used by seed genebanks as a non-destructive way to see whether seeds are sufficiently dry to be packed for long-term storage. We would like to gain an understanding of its use in other seed-related contexts, and whether there is an interest in including seed eRH / aw in the ISTA Rules or as an ISTA method. 🚨 New technical note alert! 🚨 In this technical note, a LC-MS/MS method was developed for the quantitation of #BongkrekicAcid (BA) toxin in rice noodles and Tremella mushrooms. Using the SCIEX Triple Quad 4500 system, matrix spikes at 1 ng/g in rice noodle and Tremella samples showed mean recoveries ranging from 75% to 110% and mean precision ranging from 1.2%CV to 3.2%CV. I've had great results with letting nature do what it is supposed to. Bacillus [subtilis] Suppresses Powdery Mildew and Gray Mold.
