Now, after many hours of work, the physical wood model of the Great Lule River’s source lakes, in Stuor Muorkke national park, is finally ready. The national park, one of Sweden’s very first, was established in 1909. However, only 10 years later, a huge area was excluded from the national park, to make way for a large hydroelectric dam. The Suorva dam, named after the location in Sami, was ready in 1923, and caused the inundation of islands, villages and the former shorelines upstream the dam. Later, the height of the dam was increased three times. Today, the water level is about 30 meter higher than when the national park was established. Downstream the Suorva dam is the waterfall, Stuor Muorkke, which has given the national park its name (in Swedish, Stora Sjöfallet). The waterfall Stuor Muorkke was once called the Niagara of the North and was considered one of Europe’s most spectacular waterfalls. Today the water that once cascaded the sharp cliffs is tunneled past the falls and exits just downstream. A small amount of water is let to pass over the waterfall. If everything goes well, the model will be in Naturum Laponia, in Stuor Muorkke national park from June this year and onwards. Terns Appreciate the Rubble.  With the end of MSC’s aerology program on Sable Island in 2019, the building housing the hydrogen generator and the balloon inflation room was no longer in use. During October 2023, the structure was demolished, and most materials were shipped off the island for disposal. Only the foundation - a concrete platform, as well as concrete blocks and chunks - was left at the site to reduce exposure of unvegetated sand surfaces and to provide enhanced nesting habitat for terns and petrels. Mission accomplished! The rubble is busy with terns nesting, chicks hiding, and adults standing about surveying their domain. And at night the calls of the gentle Leach’s Storm-petrels indicate they are in the area (although perhaps keeping clear of the terns). The large input of tern feces ensures that there will be a burst of enthusiastic vegetation growing in and around the site next summer. An unconventional construction method at Chalupkova 💧 During the recent flooding that affected Bratislava and other areas, groundwater levels rose significantly. The groundwater rise impacted the construction of the Chalupkova project, where we Penta Real Estate is currently finishing the excavation of a foundation pit for the office building. Under normal circumstances, groundwater is pumped out of the foundation pit. However, to prevent stress on the pit walls, they had to flood the foundation pit from the inside to balance the pressure exerted by the groundwater from the outside. This resulted in the creation of the largest “pool” in Europe. There are many non-mining examples of large industrial complexes that have been successfully repurposed, and that provide valuable learnings for future post mine closure scenarios. The historic coal-fired Battersea Power Station located in Battersea, London, has been transformed into a shopping and leisure complex, reusing much of the existing infrastructure as possible. In the Duisburg-Meiderich District in Germany, the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord is an example of a decommissioned historic pig ironworks situated in the center of a large industrial complex that has been transformed into a vast public park with extensive gardens, interactive trails and information displays along with other activities. #MineClosureTransition #Repurposing
