Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.
I have recently encountered a significant number of LEO who report their treating clinician or EAP recommended EMDR as a brief intervention. “They said it’ll only take 3 sessions” is a common phrase. I’ve also had folks tell me that a clinician can’t do EMDR so they see them for a period then refer them out.
If you’re working with LEO or any first responder then you know they’re exposed to events that could be considered traumatic all the time. Are you providing realistic treatment expectations? Are you operating from a clinically sound and formally educated background in EMDR?
I’m not EMDR certified (yet) and thus my perspective has it’s limits. But my take on this:
1. If they need EMDR, refer them to a specialist. Providing bridge care until their initial appointment is great, but anything more than that is a disservice.
2. Not everyone will benefit from abbreviated sessions of EMDR, and the more acute the stress manifestation the longer they might need.
3. It’s not first responders or military folks’ job to make sure they have a competent clinician; it’s the CLINICIAN’s ethical obligation to advertise with integrity and accept people who they are capable of effectively treating.
My favorite folks to refer to for EMDR are Nichole Weiler Michelle Weed LPC-S, CRC and Madeline Vann, LPC, CSAC, MPH, RYT. Partly because when someone needs to get in quickly, these ladies make it happen. But also because they practice with integrity and fidelity to the model.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗘𝗠𝗗𝗥 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘆: EMDR therapy is an eight-phase treatment.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. The net effect is that clients conclude EMDR therapy feeling empowered by the very experiences that once debased them. Their wounds have not just closed, they have transformed.
