EMDR is such a powerful tool To assure quality check the practitioner is accredited. https://lnkd.in/e9xqeWHC I’ve been using EMDR since 2008 - I’m an accredited practioner and working through the rather rigorous requirements to become a Consultant (fingers crossed for next year!) I had two amazing EMDR sessions with two different clients last week where things really shifted. I think these are great demonstrations of its wide applications One a lady with birth trauma (although when she first came to me she very much did not consider her experiences to be traumatic and has been on such a journey since). We have processed various elements of the birth which has helped her move on and start to be more assertive in finding out what happened in her care as she has been left with some (possibly avoidable) injuries that she actually also doesn’t understand and was too ashamed to discuss. Great shifts and she is now empowered to start a mediation process to find out more. Another lady with a complex PTSD diagnosis and years of sexual and physical abuse within a marriage - however we have spent a lot of time on resourcing and various challenges that have occurred for her including risk management and court processes. Now we are ready to process and we are starting with childhood experiences that affect her “I’m not good enough” belief and carefully working up the hierarchy of her trauma. She is processing amazingly well and starting to shift some very strongly held core beliefs as we go. I note these cases to highlight how the EMDR practitioner also needs other skills - to formulate, build a solid therapeutic relationship, to help the client build skills in regulation and also good working knowledge of trauma and the impact plus what EMDR is, does and aims to achieve. They need confidence to go to the difficult places and trust you are with them every step of the way. EMDR is often conceptualised as a quick fix and actually sometimes it does work quite rapidly - but it can also be applied to complexity with careful planning and application to great effect over time.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗘𝗠𝗗𝗥 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘆: EMDR therapy is an eight-phase treatment. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. The net effect is that clients conclude EMDR therapy feeling empowered by the very experiences that once debased them. Their wounds have not just closed, they have transformed.
