✨ There is no better time for a project announcement such as this one than during the London Climate Action Week #lcaw2024!    London is getting a new state of the art heating and cooling network!    Together with Lendlease we are bringing our state-of-the-art low-temperature heating and cooling solution to the UK. The ectogrid™ system, already celebrated in Sweden and Italy, is set to play a crucial role in the Silvertown redevelopment project in East London. This 40-year collaboration marks a significant leap towards sustainable urban living in one of the world's most dynamic cities.    ⭐ Project Highlights:    ·    UK's First ectogrid™ Installation: Following successful implementations in Medicon Village, Lund, Sweden, ectogrid™ is ready to revolutionise the UK’s approach to heating and cooling in densely populated areas. ·    Dramatic CO2 Reduction: Our heat pump-based system is projected to cut emissions by 88% compared to traditional gas boilers, equating to around 4,000 tonnes of CO2 saved annually. ·    Enhanced Energy Efficiency: By utilizing smart energy sharing between buildings and local energy sources, the ectogrid™ system can reduce energy consumption by up to 75%. ·    Broad Impact: Silvertown will host the UK’s largest ambient heating and cooling network, supporting over 6,000 new homes and commercial spaces.    This initiative is not just an energy solution—it represents our commitment to a sustainable future. Heating and cooling account for half of Europe’s energy use, with 80% sourced from non-renewable energy. As winter's grip on us loosens and we head into spring, we can reflect on how much time (up to 90%) we spend indoors and what that means for our well-being. According to our Healthy Homes Barometer, a third of Danes suffer from poor indoor climate. Excessive moisture, dust, noise, cold, and a lack of daylight are not just uncomfortable; they impact our health. And it is high time we address this.   This spring is a pivotal moment for Denmark's housing sector, with key policy negotiations underway. An obvious item for discussion is the adherence to new EU directives for energy efficiency. This initiative aims to redefine how cities can mitigate heat risks while enhancing resilience and sustainability. 🌱 The guidelines present an innovative approach to urban cooling, leveraging ancient aqueduct systems in a modern context and leveraging the powers of nature-based solutions, to address the pressing challenges of urban heat islands. On February 15th, the Usquare.brussels has been inaugurated in the presence of MEP Younous Omarjee, Chair of the REGI Committee at the European Parliament, and Theodora Flikas, from the European Commission’s DG Regio. The former National Gendarmerie Barracks in Brussels are undergoing a transformative redevelopment known as Usquare.brussels. This ambitious project co-financed by the EU focuses on creating a sustainable and cohesive living environment. The #ERDF has enabled the activation of two projects within the Usquare.brussels : 👩🏫 The project led by Université libre de Bruxelles and Vrije Universiteit Brussel has enabled the conversion of several buildings to house the Brussels Institute for Advanced Studies (BrIAS). The buildings will also provide accommodation for foreign researchers and contributing to the creation of an international network of academic and professional relations. 🔎 Financed to the tune of €10.5 million by the ERDF.   🥕 The project, led by SAU MSI (The Urban Development corporation of the Brussels-Capital Region), involves the creation of a sustainable food hall. 🔎 Financed to the tune of €1.6 million by the ERDF.   💡 Did you know? Since 1994, more than 160 projects have been launched in Brussels thanks to ERDF support. Under the 2014-2020 program, which includes Usquare.brussels, 59 projects have been developed in the Brussels-Capital Region. For the 2021-2027 program, launched in 2023, 31 projects have already been selected. Other projects will be selected throughout 2024. Over the last 20 years, an extensive green roof in Northeast Germany has been silently fighting the urban heat island effect, providing us with valuable data on how we can make our cities cooler and more sustainable. 🌱🏙️ A recent 20-year study revealed that, while temperatures in urban areas have increased due to the urban heat island effect, the temperature within the green roof's growing media remained astonishingly constant. The evidence shows that extensive green roofs can reduce roof surface temperatures significantly, offering a natural solution to urban heat challenges. Here are some highlights from the study: ✅ Temperature Stabilization: The extensive green roof demonstrated a stabilization effect of 1.5°C, a beacon of hope for cities worldwide looking to combat rising temperatures. ✅ Potential for Urban Climate Regulation: With 85% of new green roofs in Germany being extensive, there's a massive potential to replicate this cooling effect across urban landscapes. Imagine what we could achieve if more cities adopted this approach! ✅ A Call to Action: Currently, only 3-8% of roofs in Berlin are green, but with the potential for up to 50% of urban roofs, the sky's the limit for scaling up this cooling revolution. Passivhaus is all about reducing the need for those inputs while still maintaining a high level of comfort. Importantly, Passivhaus is not just for the residential sector. (The “Haus” in the name comes from the German word for “building”.) It has been successfully applied in developments in the UK and elsewhere for schools, hospitals, offices and apartment blocks. Combined with ecologically sourced materials and renewable energy sources, Passivhaus has huge potential to improve the sustainability performance of the construction sector. 🏁 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗶𝗻 “𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻” 🏁 Austria is a world leader in Passivhaus. According to the International Passive House Database, the total number of registered Passivhaus buildings worldwide is around 5,700, of which 1,090 are in Austria, second globally only to its much larger neighbour Germany. Austria is also home to seven of the ten largest registered Passivhaus buildings worldwide. Having adopted Passivhaus relatively late, the UK is catching up with 254 registered Passivhaus buildings, ranking 5th globally.
