KNX is an automation protocol mostly used in Europe right now, but it does exist in the US. Similar to BACNet and Lon (formerly LonWorks), it is used for Building Automation of commercial buildings or residential homes. It can control lighting, HVAC, blinds and shades, security systems, etc... in your home. It is exciting to see that KNX can be integrated with Control4 technology (home automation systems that integrate different systems like A/V, security systems, cameras, etc...)

It is always a pleasure meeting our members in person. Last Thursday EAE Managing Director met with Joachim Pöcking and Heiko Faltenbacher at the HECK Wall Systems GmbH headquarters in Marktredwitz/Germany. It was a great exchange on the current market situation and - despite current challenges - the opportunities and urgent needs for upscaling #energyefficient #construction and thermal #renovation of Europe's building stock. Important take-aways: 👉 Industry and the whole construction value chain need reliable framework conditions as stop-and-go policymaking blocks urgently needed investments. 👉 We all need to contribute to a positive story-telling about energy-efficient buildings to stimulate building renovation and to foster the transition towards a carbon-neutral building stock. 🌿🌍 This morning, EVVE had the privilege of attending the Zero-Emission Buildings Academy webinar, a key initiative driving the transition to a zero-emission building stock by 2050. The academy is a collaborative effort between Leonardo ENERGY, the International Copper Association Europe (ICAE), the BPIE - Buildings Performance Institute Europe and the ECTP - European Construction and sustainable built environment Technology Platform. During the session, we delved into the crucial role buildings play in the #EnergyTransition. The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (#EPBD) outlines a comprehensive roadmap for achieving a #ZeroEmissionBuildingStock, emphasising the necessity of a coordinated renovation wave. Knowledge sharing emerged as a pivotal element in accelerating this transition. This insightful session, featuring experts Arturo Fernández Villalba from Arup and Sarah Bekessy from RMIT University, showcased innovative approaches to sustainable urban development and #BiodiversityConservation. They presented successful projects from around the world that demonstrate the transformative potential of nature-based solutions and #GreenInfrastructure. Their expertise provided a comprehensive understanding of how these strategies can bring greater sustainability to #UrbanEnvironments. EPBD News from Strasbourg! 📰 The European Window Stakeholders European Solar Shading Organisation ES-SO, Glass for Europe, ARGE, EUROPEAN ALUMINIUM, EuroWindoor AISBL, EPPA - The European PVC Window Profiles and related Building Products Association are delighted to announce the positive plenary vote in the European Parliament on the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) on 12 March 2024. This milestone reaffirms European policymakers' commitment to accelerating ambitious renovations towards a zero-emission building stock by 2050. At ES-SO, we welcome the EPBD's reinforced focus on renovation, establishing a robust framework for energy performance requirements in both new and existing buildings. This emphasis will incentivize Member States to prioritize energy renovations, fostering improved energy efficiency, reduced CO2 emissions, and enhanced indoor climate conditions. We commend the EPBD's expanded scope, now encompassing Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) considerations such as temperature, humidity, indoor air quality, daylight, and acoustics. This holistic approach prioritizes occupants' well-being and aligns with sustainable building practices. As the revised EPBD progresses towards adoption, clear guidelines from the European Commission are vital for effective national implementation. ES-SO is dedicated to actively supporting this phase, ensuring alignment with our industry's principles of sustainability, energy efficiency, and innovative solutions. Looking ahead, the window stakeholders and ES-SO eagerly anticipate the swift adoption of the revised EPBD by Member States, facilitating national implementation. New EPBD adopted, new chances to insure health and wellbeing and energy performance in our buildings. This is now more important than ever, now that climate change shows that our buildings need to become more resilient and adaptive to this new and more hostile overheating environment.

85% of EU buildings were built before 2000 and amongst those, 75% have a poor energy performance. The retrofitting of existing buildings in Europe is a crucial strategy to meet climate targets, improve energy efficiency, and address the aging infrastructure in urban areas. 🏢 🏫 🏛 This panel aims to look at the life cycle of retrofitting existing building stocks and will cover challenges, innovations, and best practices in retrofitting, emphasizing the role of policy, technology, and collaboration in achieving energy efficiency and environmental goals. Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the ASHRAE Region XIV International Building Decarbonization Conference 2024 that took place in Madrid, together with my Gleeds colleague Jose Carlos Montoya. A conference with experts from 24 countries, presenting top-level findings on policies, case studies and research. A key topic was the recast #EPBD (Energy Performance of Buildings Directive) with up to date presentations by Stefan Moser, Head of Unit in #DGEnergy of the European Commission and by Silvia Rafael from the Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico, shaping the future of decarbonization in buildings in the European Union and Spain. The main concepts that appear thoughout the sessions were: ⚡ Energy efficiency: a clear pre-requisite to decarbonise buildings, the first step. ♻ Whole-life carbon: as operational carbon management is getting consolidated, the main challenge is embodied carbon, to reach a "total Carbon" approach. 🏡 Health & wellbeing: two concepts deeply linked to a decarbonised building. 📊 Data collection and assessment: smart buildings would allow as to collect data and take the right retrofitting decisions. From Gleeds we support our clients in the decarbonisation journey of the building stock and in new constructions, as one of the fields of climate change mitigation #earthsday.

The 2024 ACEEE's Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings, August 4-9, will bring together professionals from around the globe to the Asilomar Conference Grounds to collaborate, debate and advance the technologies, practices and research necessary to equitably decarbonize the building sector in a manner that addresses the urgency of the climate crisis. The 2024 theme is Equity and Climate Action: Time to Deliver. Two conference co-chairs are, Jessica Granderson of LBNL and Karma Sawyer of PNNL.
