Have you always dreamed of talking to your pets? This week in our AI news: Jane Lawton, Impact Manager at the "Earth Species Project," discusses an experiment where a machine and a bird engage in a dialogue to understand animal communication. Research has discovered complex communication in plants and animals, such as Amazonian turtles emitting over 200 sound frequencies. The project aims to classify animal sounds using AI to map and understand communication patterns between species. The first dialogue between a machine and a bird is intended to understand communication mechanisms. Watch Jane Lawton's presentation video.

🐝 Since von Frisch made the breakthrough discovery of the bee waggle dance, through to Roger Payne's whale songs that sparked a movement, Jane Goodall's pioneering work with chimps, and Irene Pepperberg's groundbreaking parrot studies—scientists have been gradually unveiling the complexity of animal communication. 🗣️ 🤖 Today, with AI opening new possibilities, our trustee Dr. Diana Reiss and other leading researchers are debating critical ethical questions generated by advances in the field. 👉 A recent piece in Nautilus Magazine highlights these pressing issues, examining the implications of merely understanding animal communication versus engaging in a dialogue with them. In other words, if we successfully decode another species' communication, should we talk back? 👀 What do you think? Do other species want to have a conversation with us?
