In this article, Md Ashraf Aziz Ishrak Fahim reinterprets Ibn al-Nafīs’ work to argue that reason is not an independent entity but is shaped by its social context, challenging the traditional dichotomy of reason versus revelation. This perspective invites a reevaluation of claims to natural truth and encourages dialogue among diverse epistemologies, emphasizing the role of power in defining knowledge. https://lnkd.in/ecZBPfmG

Facilitating Scientific Growth Banning Islam vs. Encouraging Science: I argue that rather than banning Islam, Atatürk could have focused on facilitating scientific growth by creating an environment conducive to research and innovation. This could have included offering incentives for Western scientists to migrate to Turkey and fostering a culture that values scientific inquiry alongside religious beliefs. The question I raise is how banning Islam could realistically put Turkey on a path to development when it risks alienating a significant portion of the population.

Omar Nasr (one of our PhD students) has contributed a chapter on "Colonialism and the Qur'ān" to the recently published edited volume ‘The European Qurʾān: Encounters with the Holy Text of Islam from the Ninth to the Twentieth Century,’ edited by Jan Loop, Naima Afif, and Weltmuseum Wien and published by De Gruyter. Colonial powers often instrumentalized the Qur'an to assert control over Muslim populations, but their approaches and success varied. This article challenges simplistic views on the relationship between the Qur'an and European colonialism, offering a more nuanced understanding of how British, French, Austro-Hungarian, and German colonial traditions engaged with the sacred text of Islam. An exclusive keynote address by Professor Emeritus of Social Sciences Michael Walzer from Princeton University, one of the world's leading political theorists 🌎, in collaboration with the Faculty of Law at the Hebrew University. Prof. Walzer, the author of "Just and Unjust Wars" and "Areas of Justice", discusses key issues related to international humanitarian law, just war theory, and ethical considerations in warfare. In the keynote address, he mainly refers to the pitfall that Israel faces in the war with the terrorist organization Hamas, which brings moral challenges and difficulties that are in part unique to its situation such as warfare in an underground city. The achievements during the Islamic Golden Age clearly demonstrate that Islam was not opposed to science; rather, it fostered an environment where inquiry and exploration thrived. This period was marked by significant advancements that not only enriched Islamic civilization but also laid essential foundations for future scientific developments in the West. In summary, my assertion about the compatibility of Islam with scientific progress is well-supported by historical evidence showing that the contributions of Muslim scholars during this era were pivotal in shaping various fields of knowledge that continue to influence modern science today.
