#dtemcares HERITAGE DAY REFLECTION: Understanding Each Other's Journeys As we celebrate Heritage Day, let’s take a moment to reflect on the incredible diversity we encounter daily, not just in our broader society but right here in our classrooms. Each student walks a different path, carrying with them unique experiences, struggles, and stories. For some, it's the pressure of juggling academics with family responsibilities; for others, it’s the daily challenge of affording transport to get to class. We all have our own hardships, and it can be easy to forget that the person sitting next to you in class might be facing challenges you know nothing about. Some days, just making it to campus is a victory in itself. This Heritage Day, I encourage each of us to be more understanding and patient—not just with our classmates, but also with our families and ourselves. Take time to truly see each other, to listen, and to offer a hand when you can. And if you're feeling overwhelmed, know that it’s okay to seek help. There’s strength in reaching out. At the same time, we must be mindful not to take advantage of the understanding and support we extend to one another. Misrepresenting our struggles can make it harder for those truly in need to receive the help they deserve. Let’s stay honest with ourselves and each other, fostering a community built on trust and integrity. Let’s work towards building a classroom and a community where everyone feels seen, heard, and supported—because when we stand together, we’re stronger.

The countdown to residency begins! 🎉 As of today, only 36 days stand between now and our 2024 GPCW Summer Residency. And for those of you traveling to Gunnison the Friday before residency's official start date, only 5 weeks remain until you land in sunny Gunni! Here are three quick tips you should know for summer residency: 1. If you're traveling from outside of Colorado, know that it can get a little chilly in the early mornings and evenings. Consider packing a light jacket or sweater. (Fun fact: Gunnison's winter temperatures are often some of the coldest in the nation.) 2. There is an abundance of fun activities and beautiful vistas in Gunnison and neighboring Crested Butte. Some favorites - see the wildflowers in Crested Butte, visit Blue Mesa Reservoir, eat at Sherpa Cafe or High Alpine Brewing Company (both within walking distance to campus), hike at Curecanti, or visit an art gallery. Consider carving some time into your residency scheduled to explore! Check out the following link for more ideas: https://lnkd.in/eKFi9qVw. 3. If you're traveling from a place that is low altitude, consider packing electrolyte or hydration supplements such Liquid IV, Nuun, or the beloved Acli-Mate (acli-mate.com), which is also sold at the campus bookstore. Gunnison's elevation is around 7,700 feet. If you're not accustomed to this type of elevation (i.e. if you live closer to sea level), you can help your body adjust to the altitude by staying extra-hydrated. We can't wait to see you at residency! Only 5 more weeks! ⛰ . . . #westerncoloradouniversity #westerncolorado #gunnisonriver #gunnisonvalley #gunnison #graduateprogramincreativewriting #summerresidency #creativewriting #publishing #MFA

Hispanic Heritage Month in Construction From September 15 to October 15, we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, recognizing the rich histories, diverse cultures, and significant contributions of people with origins in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Hispanic talents play a crucial role in the construction industry, making up nearly 30% of all the people involved. These are hardworking professionals out there building our roads, schools, and homes. Their contributions are vital to the growth of our communities and the industry as a whole. Let’s use this celebration month to pay more attention to whether they have the same chances to grow, stay safe, and advance in their careers. Language barriers are evident challenge, affecting access to safety training and skills development. But is it all or there may be other obstacles? What else might be limiting the opportunities of this large part of the industry? And what can be done to create an environment where everyone has the tools and support to succeed? Will it help to increase overall productivity in construction? Please, share your thoughts. #HispanicHeritageMonth #ConstructionProductivity #ProductivityInConstruction #ConstructionManagement #CelebrateDiversity #ConstruyendoElFuturo #BuildingTogether #Gratitude

We continue to grapple with gaps in STEM Related careers despite numerous organizations attempting to challenge the status quo. NAPE, National Alliance for Parterships in Equity, STEM Pipeline uses data-driven programs that focus on girls and women in STEM. From their website: NAPE and its Education Foundation believes that if women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities were prepared to work in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers in proportion to their current workforce engagement, high-tech labor demands by business could be met, U.S. global competitiveness would improve, global challenges could be better addressed, and women’s economic power would increase leading to stronger families and communities. https://lnkd.in/enfJa_in
