How would you feel? Living and working out on the oceans can be rewarding, but also incredibly hard sometimes. How to improve mental healthcare at sea? There is no simple one-fits-all solution. Most seafarers love their job and the sea. But all of them, men and women, want to be heard. Like anyone else, they need to be appreciated and respected for the work they do. They need genuine interest in their work. And care and attention from fellow humans. How you achieve this will vary greatly by culture, location and other factors. There’s not one ‘standard’ seafarer, there are almost two million of them. Many initiatives for your ships and crews you can perfectly come up with yourself. But most importantly: keep any initiatives going 365 days per year. Treat them like you would want to be treated yourself. Seafarers are one family when out at sea. Treat them like family – your family. Because they are. #mentalhealth #seafarers #shipping #offshore Read more expert advice on SAFETY4SEA at this #WorldMentalHealthDay

“There is an urgent need for systemic reforms to safeguard their mental and physical welfare whilst nurturing a culture of respect, inclusivity, and support both at sea and ashore.” This was written in the recently published Seafarer Happiness Index for Q1 2024, and it illustrates exactly why proper mental health support and training is crucial. The happiness index rose from 6.36 to 6.94 out of 10 compared to Q4 2023, and some of the key factors to this were: • Improved connectivity: Facilitating communication with loved ones reduces the feeling of loneliness and isolation. • Positive work relationships: Seafarers who foster a sense of camaraderie at work show the highest satisfaction levels. • Well-being initiatives and policies: Companies that prioritize empathy, leadership, and the well-being of their crew have a clear positive impact. It is imperative to address the causes that negatively impact the happiness of seafarers and to prioritize mental health support and training to improve their overall mental health and well-being. Although the report from Q1’s happiness index presents an optimistic outlook, it is vital to continue to address the causes of poor wellbeing at sea and to remember that even among the improved areas, there is still a lot of room for improvement. Thank you to The Mission to Seafarers, NorthStandard, Idwal, and INMARSAT for the valuable insights. In the shipping industry, we must clearly define fatigue as a lack of sleep. Fatigue remains one of the leading root causes of incidents at sea. No amount of resilience training can compensate for the effects of insufficient sleep!
#SeaAdvent Day 16 – Getting Real About Resilience 🧠 At sea, we often demand more resilience from seafarers without addressing the root causes of their stress and fatigue. Unlike systems, computers or machinery, seafarers are expected to push beyond their limits. It's time we rethink this approach. 🤔 We can’t expect good outcomes if we overlook the mental health impacts on seafarers. By expanding our definitions and responses, we can: ✅ Provide essential care, enhancing well-being, job satisfaction, and quality of life. ✅ Reduce risks by improving focus, decision-making, and emergency reactions. ✅ Increase productivity with a mentally healthy workforce. ✅ Improve retention, as seafarers will stay with companies that value their health. Current training can be better adapted - and there should be better planning to include mental health drills onboard. Would anyone really know what to do? Also, while the concept of mental health champions onboard is a nod in the right direction, we can't pile on responsibility without making real changes at sea. Seafarers need time and space to live a life – shore leave, work-life balance, and an escape from the grind are crucial. We need to be able to make better, to spot problems and to have the ability to diagnose, treat and support. The solutions are not just about managing mental health problems though; it’s about fixing the structural conditions that cause them. 🌍 We need to tackle fatigue and stress, and there needs to be the surrounding aspects such as fair pay on time, reliable connectivity, good food, and better conditions with social elements onboard. These basics are essential to preventing mental health issues before they arise, then we can truly set about addressing the problem when we have risk-managed the causes. 💡 We have to prioritise mental health as a critical facet of maritime safety and productivity. By working together—maritime leaders, mental health professionals, and researchers—we can build a future where the well-being of seafarers isn't just an aspiration but an achievement. #SeafarerMentalHealth #Shipping #SeafarerWelfare #MentalHealthAtSea #MaritimeIndustry #Resilience #Wellbeing #MentalHealthMatters
