59 bikes. 59 lives. Thousands left grieving. Each of these ghost bikes represents a person on a bike who has been killed in Aotearoa New Zealand in the last 5 years. In almost all cases, lower speed limits would have reduced the harm. Take a moment's silence to reflect on World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims 🕯️ With special thanks to the people who dreamt up and laboured on this art installation, to Greenpeace Aotearoa for their support, and to Brake (New Zealand) for their tireless work to make our roads safer. 📸 Simon Oosterman The full story 👇 https://lnkd.in/girqWy5s #ghostbike #artinstallation #tamakimakaurau #roaddeaths #speedrule #WDoR2024

I am proud that #Henkel Hungary is participating in PET Cup since 2017, every single year. We are not just financially contributing to the event but our colleagues work hard on the ground, voluntarily. What is PET Cup? Our longest river is Tisza in Hungary with its 597km length. Every year organization called PET Cup is organizing the cleaning activity of the river, riverbank, its influent rivers and the drainage area from trash, plastic, bottles, cans and all sorts of waste. Sometimes you can find to the extreme... toilet seats, zillions of shoes, flip-flops, shoe sole, puppets, bicycles, tyres and you cannot imagine... a Trabant... Over the years, the cleaning activity turned into a competition because companies are joining and collecting the trash which being segregated and measured. Henkel Hungary joined the movement as first multinational company and ever since supporting the activity. This year we participated with 24 volunteers and managed to collect nearly 600kg trash which is 8% of the total collected trash this year. With that we were ranked #9 from 19 competing teams. Special credit from my #HenkelConsumerBrands team to Viktória Szirmák-Szabó main organizer and Kinga Tóth who is almost every year participating <3 #volunteering #teambuilding #doinggood #WeAreHenkel #sustainability #rivercleaning #environmentcleaning #cleaningproject #jointhemovement #itstartswithus #smallsteps Video will tell you more than thousands words: https://lnkd.in/d5Q6YGFs

Our new report - Walk, Wheel and Thrive - demonstrates the value of the National Cycle Network in delivering well-being for the people of Wales. At 1,600 miles, the NCN in Wales is roughly the same length as the trunk road network. It delivers a wide range of social, economic, environmental and cultural benefits, achieving impact across all 7 national well-being goals. Despite the benefits, the Network is struggling with the effects of extreme weather and climate change. The range of weather conditions that routes have to endure is leading to issues such as landslips, rock fall, flooding and more. Today, we are calling on the Welsh Government and other partners to recognise the Network as an important national asset and ensure necessary maintenance to prevent issues and protect it for future generations. This is simply unacceptable. The local planning departments and county and city governments must take notice. Only with proper traffic planning can these statistics change. Adding safe cycling lanes and areas only takes willpower of local governments to implement needed safety rules for road improvements. As our area continues to grow so will these terrible statistics unless change is implemented in local planning. With the thousands of miles of roadways in the areas it is not unreasonable to demand safe bike lanes for those who choose to exercise and avoid using cars and trucks.

A ‘Hole’ Lot Of Problems We all encounter potholes on public roads, for many on a daily basis, but are we really at crisis levels? Yes, according to Cycling UK, “Britain’s pothole crisis costs lives”. According to the charity’s statistics, nearly one person per week (255 people) has been killed or seriously injured while cycling due to potholes and road defects on Britain’s roads since 2017. Thanks to Britain’s inclement weather and post-2008 cuts to local authorities’ budgets, the quality of the country’s roads ranks 37th in the world, between Slovenia and Lithuania. In 2019, over 700,000 complaints about potholes were received by Councils, according to the Federation of Small Businesses. In our latest article, we will look at the real-life dangers of potholes, why the UK has a problem, whether enough is being done, and what you can do if you have been involved in a pothole-related incident. https://lnkd.in/eEsBX2S7 #personalinjury #personalinjuryclaim #injuryclaim #publicliability #legalservices #legaladvice #solicitors #solicitorsuk #nicholsonjonessuttonsolicitors #asknjssolicitors

BLM wants to charge for accessing Mtn Bike trails on BLM land, built by volunteers. So many of our choices and behaviors have invisible filters that separate our convenience and comfort from the actual reality of a global, mechanized, unfeeling economic superorganism. Beef or pork pieces wrapped neatly in plastic packaging trigger tasty recipes of teriyaki or barbecue sauce in our minds, untethered from any emotional recognition that these 'pieces' recently belonged to living, breathing curious/aware animals (who have serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin and the complete suite of mammalian emotions). The vast majority of living habitat on Earth is in her oceans - yet ocean creatures are even further emotionally distant. But what gets ground up into fish sticks has a deeper cost than its on-land parallel of billions of cows/pigs/60+billion chickens per year. Strip-mining ocean ecosystems is not the same as farming chickens. The chickens in factory farms have altered phenotypes, and suffer, but it could be said there’s no harm to the 'species as a whole'. But pulling up entire communities of sea creatures, likely to be ground together to make fish sticks and kamaboko, is doing ecological/diversity damage that will last a very, very long time. A lot of aquatic communities have creatures that are quite old… maybe many hundreds of years…in the case of seabed mining, large masses of ocean floor material are rained back down, and cover the slow-moving animals down there; also the disturbance of unoxidized sediments can create an anoxic layer near the bottom which kills...just about everything. Obviously currents and other considerations are variables. But to human eyes it’s like we’re reaching into an alien dimension, and we retrieve things we can put a money price on. Empathy or care for communities which live slow lives in cold utter darkness is just beyond what our species currently has concern for. The below video looks straight from an Avatar movie. Our current system monetizes things we can’t even see, and in doing so we eat creatures which look foreign enough that we don’t care. Technology will be needed through and past the Great Simplification - but imo tech should be downstream of our ethics, values and consciousness. Thus, the energy transition will (mostly) not be about energy. It will be about our relationships with each other and with Earth's ecosystems. It will be more about ethics than technology. It will have to be about Life. NB: The good news is that much of the 'strip mining of the seas' will dwindle this coming century as cheap fossil hydrocarbons go away, effectively making the oceans much larger and more remote again. Let's hope there's enough left to regenerate. NB2: It’s good to bear in mind that the complexity of nature means that not everything regrows if destroyed. For instance, at the point the Amazon rainforest turns to desert, there’s no road back - short of re-evolving it.
What do you think about the indiscriminate destruction of marine life in Marine Protected Areas by industrial fishing trawlers? 81% of the British public support a ban on bottom trawling in the UK's Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). 64% of respondents thought bottom trawling was already banned in MPAs. https://lnkd.in/ebsa493d Oceana UK Oceana Blue Marine Foundation Open Seas Greenpeace UK
