The adoption of digital wallets in the Middle East is expected to soar from 564 million now to 969 million by 2028. Across the world, it is estimated more than half of the population will be using a mobile wallet by 2025. 🌐 Mobile wallets becoming universal is one of the top 10 trends shaping the payments landscape, according to Visa. 📊 How do new age fintechs and networks take on VISA? 📊 This was a conversation Nishant Suri and I had a few weeks ago. As new age payment rails powering real time payments (RTP) grow: Ex: UPI: India, Pix: Brazil, PayNow: Singapore, Promptpay: Thailand, is this an opportunity to break VISA & Mastercard (MC) network domination? 👇 Let’s look at VISA’s business (in 2023): 1️⃣ Payments volume: ~$14.8T 2️⃣ Total net income as a % of volume: ~10-12 bps. 3️⃣ Net income margin: ~50%! Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia have margins of 30-35%. 4️⃣ And this is 0 risk Ex: Lending fintechs end up bearing some % of the risk (5% FLDG), PAs only earn a fraction of 20 bps (acquiring share) as revenues 5️⃣ For comparison: if it becomes a PA, at current volumes @ 5bps, revenue will be ~$6B! ❓ But with the rise of RTP networks, is this an opportunity to challenge VISA & MC? Let’s look at the stats: ✅ 2023 Data ($ Volumes, Txns in Bn, total % charged / txn) ▶ VISA: $14.8T, 212B, 2% / txn ▶ Pix: $3T, 38B, 0.2% / txn ▶ UPI: $2T, 117B, 1.1% on select txns of AoV > 2000 💳 In < 10 years, Pix & UPI reached ~20% of Visa volumes, and # txns processed. UPI is free. Pix txns are charged 1/10 of card (VISA) rates. Great for the merchant, but may not incentivize innovation by 3rd parties, since the rev pie is smaller 👇 Mastercard and VISA are making plays in RTP rails 💳 Countries are building local card networks to reduce reliance on international companies and optimize costs: Ex: Rupay in India. But MC / VISA are making inroads into powering RTP. Ex: Promptpay (Thailand 🇹🇭 ), PayNow (Singapore 🇸🇬 ). Both are powered by MasterCard. And PLIN & Yape (RTP rails in Peru 🇵🇪) are powered by VISA 💳 VISA has become a full stack fintech: recent acquisitions in Currencycloud (Xborder, UK), Tink (AA - Sweden), Pismo (Card issuer, LATAM), signals its focus on open banking, card issuing, and international markets ❓ So then what can new age RTPs do to take on VISA if it has margins, cash on hand, and volumes? 1️⃣ ++ features such as Rewards & Credit will drive adoption. Pix Credit, Credit on UPI, and processing reward points through rails will drive customers to use RTP over cards 2️⃣ Intercountry RTP linkage for Xborder solutions: ASEAN has done this, where RTP rails of different countries are integrated, outside of VISA integrations 3️⃣ Export RTP tech stack: UPI & Pix models can be exported. But they need to move fast. MC and VISA are building solutions to power RTP, and there are network effects to having multiple countries on similar rails (quicker linkage) 💳 Smartphone companies such as Apple may have a closed loop play: Ex: Iphone + POS + bank acct / BNPL (issuer). As the issuer, Apple can authenticate to the merchant at the time of txn.
