Some disabled people need information in different formats. This provision is one of the requirements of the Equality Act, but I’m not sure if the medical profession always abides by it. Therefore question 7 in the ‘Disability & Breast Cancer’ chapter from ‘The Complete Guide to Breast Cancer’ is all about asking if you can have information in other ways, such as in Easy Read or Audio. #BreastCancerTreatment #DisabledAndBreastCancer #PinkOctober2024 ID: A white-skinned middle-aged woman with dyed pink hair & wearing pink clothes, reading aloud from a book.

Day 91 of 366: Reflecting on Endometriosis Awareness Month 🌼💛 As March, Endometriosis Awareness Month, comes to a close, it's a poignant time to reflect on the profound impacts of a condition that affects 1 in 10 women during their reproductive years. This month is not just about raising awareness; it's about understanding, advocacy, and supporting the millions of women like my fiancée, Amy, who have battled with endometriosis. Amy's journey with endometriosis has been long and fraught with pain and misunderstanding. For years, I watched helplessly as she struggled with debilitating symptoms. Like many, I didn't fully grasp the severity of her pain. Society's callous advice to "toughen up" only adds to the isolation many women feel. However, Amy's decision to undergo a hysterectomy marked a significant turning point in her life. The transformation post-surgery was nothing short of miraculous, offering her relief and a new lease on life. Witnessing her journey has been eye-opening and deeply moving. The Role We All Play; Educate and Share: Let's dismantle myths by sharing factual information about endometriosis. Knowledge is power. Support and Empathy: Creating supportive environments that acknowledge and adapt to the needs of those with chronic conditions is essential. It starts with empathy. Advocate for Research and Better Care: Supporting organizations focused on endometriosis research and advocacy can lead to breakthroughs in treatment and awareness. Endometriosis Awareness Month may be drawing to a close, but our commitment to supporting those affected shouldn't end here. By fostering understanding and pushing for advancements in care, we honor the resilience of endo warriors like Amy. Their battles remind us of the strength found in vulnerability and the importance of community support. As we move forward, let's carry the lessons of this month with us. Through education, empathy, and advocacy, we can contribute to a world where endometriosis is met with the seriousness it deserves, and those affected receive the support and care they need. Together, let's continue to make a difference in the lives of those battling endometriosis, today and every day. 🌟💪 #EndometriosisAwareness #EndoWarriors #WomensHealth #MarchAwareness #Day91of366

"The proportion of HPV testing was lower among women with any disability (50.2%) than among women without disabilities (54.8%). However, when broken out by type of disability, women with a cognitive disability had a higher screening rate (55.9%) and women with sensory (49.7%), physical (48.2%), and more than two disabilities (47.8%) disabilities had a lower screening rate than women without a disability." #MedicalScreening #CervicalScreening #PhysicalDisabilities #HPV https://lnkd.in/gbuEQ4Bt

An iron lung is a large, cylindrical tank that was used to help patients breathe when they were unable to control their respiratory muscles: The patient lay on their back inside the tank, with only their head and neck exposed. The iron lung created a vacuum around the patient's chest, which caused their lungs to expand and inhale. The pressure then changed, causing the chest to fall and the patient to exhale. The iron lung was designed by Philip Drinker and Louis Shaw in 1929 and was a common treatment for patients with respiratory paralysis caused by polio. The iron lung helped to advance the development of mechanical ventilators and contributed to the growth of disability rights. The iron lung was only effective for patients without complications, such as infections or mucus. Patients with respiratory paralysis are unable to cough, so these complications could cause significant problems. Other respiratory devices include the rocking bed, which uses gravity to help with breathing, and intratracheal positive-pressure respiration, which uses a portable machine to apply positive pressure directly to the patient's lungs.

We’re thrilled to announce the latest issue of Elephants and Tea, One Herd — our two-year initiative to address health disparities in the AYA cancer community. Too often, biases based on race, age, gender, sexual orientation, and other factors affect access to care. But today, we’re amplifying the voices of those who have lived these experiences and sharing powerful stories of courage, resilience, and advocacy. In this issue, hear from individuals who’ve faced these biases and more. Plus, check out results from our community survey that helped shape this project. A huge thank you to all the authors, our sponsors (Eisai, Genentech, and Pfizer), and our advisory team for their dedication to this cause. Let’s continue to uplift one another — because we are One Herd. Australia is on track to one day eliminate cervical cancer, but we need to make sure no-one is left behind. We know that people with disability are less likely to receive cervical screening than the general population. While this is due in part to low awareness of the importance of cervical screening among the general population, including people with disability, it is also related to factors that can be addressed by health practitioners. These include: • poor physical accessibility in clinical spaces, and lack of time to discuss accessibility needs and concerns with health practitioners • hesitation in discussing or disclosing sexual activity to health practitioners • incorrect assumptions about the sexual activity of people with disability. Screen Me! is a reminder that people with a disability have the same right to preventative healthcare as anyone else.
