The Silent Suffering of Animals 💔😒 Every day, millions of animals wait in fear, sensing their impending fate in slaughterhouses. The pain, the fear, the helplessness—it’s all visible in their eyes. And yet, we choose to ignore their suffering for just 15-20 minutes of taste on our plates. Their lives are not ours to take. With the abundance of plant-based options available today, we have the power to make kinder, more conscious choices. Let's reflect on the impact of our actions and choose a way of living that doesn't involve causing pain or fear to innocent beings. The change begins with us. Let’s break the cycle of unnecessary harm and create a world where all lives are valued.✅🌱 #govegan #chooselife #plantbasedliving #endanimalsuffering #ethicalchoices #sustainableliving #veganforchange #kindliving #savetheanimals #choosepeace

We are one week into the National Audubon Society's (NAS) Christmas Bird Count period. If you haven't, locate a count group near you and participate. I worked an area in Dallas County, Iowa, today, with three notable sightings: a Red-Shouldered Hawk, a Harlan's Red-Tailed Hawk, and over 200 American Robins in several groups around red cedar saplings. I've attached photos of the three in the Comments. One strong bit of evidence for climate change was a 2010 "State of the Birds" report from NAS that examined 40 years of data from these winter bird counts across the continent. About 300 species were included, of which two thirds had shifted the region of their densest population to the north by 35 miles (the lower limit) to well over 400 miles for some species. Of the other third, many had made shifts, but in other directions. I agree with the NAS conclusion that climate change is the best explanation by far. A species that I should have seen today, the once-common Black-Capped Chickadee, has made one of the dramatic shifts, about 425 miles for its population density. In prime habitat today, I didn't see any, and in recent months in other Iowa locations, I'm lucky to see one or two. In the 1970s, when I was learning how to bird, a banditry of chickadees would sing and scold almost every time I into a pasture or public area. Not so anymore. (A "banditry" is the official word for a group of chickadees, similar to a "murder" of crows or a "pod" of pelicans.) For more information on the Christmas Bird Counts, follow the link.
