Teaching biology or ecology this year? Francis Joyce and I created an online module through OCELOTS (Online Content for Experiential Learning of Tropical Systems) to teach undergraduate students about seed dispersal in the context of tropical forest restoration. The module has adaptations for both online and in-person classes and engages students through images, videos, a real case study, a dispersal activity, and a scaffolded restoration project. On our Tanzania program, Costal Ecology and Natural Resource Management, current student Eli Taub is researching birds in the Ngezi-Vumawimbi Nature Forest Reserve of Pemba Island in Zanzibar. Eli recently used the mist net method to catch and examine a Pygmy Kingfisher for his socioecological assessment. In this module, we explored the differences between the linear economy and the circular economy, identified the various loops within the circular economy, and delved into the concept of industrial ecology and its definition.

On May 28th, I presented an "eco-social" approach in my work. This session explored the philosophy of Murray bookchin, concepts like eco-feminism and deep ecology, as well as the role of social work in this paradigm. This perspective, influenced by bookchin's ideas, has profoundly shaped my personal and professional worldview, going beyond just an academic pursuit. #ecosocial #ecofeminism #murray_bookchin #socialwork

In the hidden wetlands of the Southeast, finding Spotted Turtles can feel like chasing ghosts. In this month's Science of Scales, Houston discusses our recent publication that dives into the mystery surrounding these elusive turtles. Across multiple years and numerous survey sites, we ventured into vast swamps where sightings were scarce and the search was often daunting. Despite the challenges, our research sheds light on Spotted Turtle habitats and offers essential insights for their conservation in these fragmented southeastern ecosystems.
