The Research & Innovation team at BITS Pilani is excited to share a new publication by Nitish Kumar Gupta, Jaspreet Singh , Subhendu Sarkar published in Nanotechnology (Institute of Physics)🎉   𝐓𝐢𝐭le: A hybrid effective medium description for nanoporous gold films and thickness-mediated control of optical absorption Nanoporous gold films have emerged as an ideal substrate for rapid, quantitative detection of analytes with excellent specificity and high sensitivity. Our study investigates thickness-mediated compositional changes and their impact on scattering characteristics of thin nanoporous gold films fabricated through de-alloying process. Specifically, we observe thickness-induced morphological and structural changes across different fabricated samples from 25 to 100 nm in thickness. This results in substantial change in their optical scattering characteristics, which have been captured experimentally and explained by devising a hybrid theoretical model comprising Maxwell-Garnett & Bruggeman effective medium theories. The Research & Innovation, BITS Pilani team is excited to share a new publication by Prof. Tribeni Roy and other author published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces. 🎉   𝐓𝐢𝐭le: Insights of Zinc Ion Storage in Chilli-Stem Derived Porous Carbon Enabling Ultrastability and High Energy Density of Zinc-Ion Hybrid Supercapacitors.   Highlights: We developed an energy-dense, and ultrastable zinc ion hybrid supercapacitors realized using activated porous carbons derived from chilli-stems. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed easy Zn ion diffusion through interconnected channels and subsequent pore fillings within the carbon electrodes, rendering impressive performance. The Research & Innovation, BITS Pilani team is excited to share a new publication by Prof. Manish Gupta and other author published in IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices. 🎉   𝐓𝐢𝐭le: Sub-60 mV/decade Dynamic Subthreshold Swing in Bulk Negative Capacitance Junctionless MOSFET.   Highlights: This work provides physical insights on the occurrence of dynamic sub-60 mV/decade switching in a negative capacitance (NC) junctionless (JL) transistor designed on a bulk substrate. Recognizing that the location of the conduction channel is a key factor governing the matching between ferroelectric and gate capacitances, we showcase the outperformance of bulk NCJL transistor compared to NCJL device designed on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate. Results highlight that NCJL transistors designed with relatively higher bulk doping can achieve better dynamic Sswing along with higher on-to-off current ratio. We also investigate the short channel performance comparison of bulk and SOI NCJL transistors. The Research & Innovation team at BITS Pilani is excited to share a new publication by Prabakaran Saravanan, DANAVATH BALU,  Piyush Chandra Verma ,  Narala Suresh kumar Reddy, SUJITH R  published in TRIBOLOGY LETTERS Journal. 🎉   𝐓𝐢𝐭le: Tribological Investigation of Chemically Modified Polytetrafluoroethylene Coating for Hydrogen Valve Application   Hydrogen embrittlement (HE) can cause catastrophic failure of stainless steel valve and related components in hydrogen refueling stations (HRSs), reducing reliability, safety and increasing the cost. Here, in this study, the ability of chemically modified polytetrafluoroethylene (CM-PTFE) coatings on steel substrates in reducing the HE susceptibility and, the friction and wear of valve parts, are explored due to its low hydrogen (H2) permeability and excellent solid lubrication. The solid lubrication properties of CM-PTFE-coated steel samples were investigated before and after H2 charging at a pressure of 7 × 105 Pascals. After H2 charging, the samples were subjected to CHNS and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis to quantify the percentage of H2 absorption and its effect on crystallinity of the samples, respectively, and interesting insights were obtained from both CHNS and XRD analysis. Furthermore, the effect of H2 charging on uncoated steel discs and CM-PTFE-coated discs were thoroughly investigated by hardness measurements, tribological characterization, wear behavior analysis of discs and pins and chemical elemental mapping. All test results are harmoniously suggesting that the H2 charging indeed softened the material significantly. The developed double function CM-PTFE coatings can minimize H2 permeability and also reduce friction, and wear of the components in HRSs. Transducers and Measurement Systems (INSTR F312) is a core course for UG students enrolled in Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering (ENI, as they call it) at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. Today was the concluding session of the MEMS, Microfluidics and Nanoelectronics (MMNE) Lab research activities' showcasing to the students. Thoroughly enjoyed the sessions given by research scholars from the lab. Background shows the picture depicting PCR basics, PoC currently being developed using microfluidic platforms). This highlights the need of the day to focus on interdisciplinary topics, where one utilizes the tools and techniques of one discipline & solves the problem of another (probably with no overt connections, whatsoever). Needless to mention, it's always good to interact with bright, young & inquisitive minds. As the current semester is about to end soon, I thought to pen this gratitude post for the continued learning sessions with everyone involved.
