UGANDA COMMISSIONS LANDMARK 600 MW KARUMA HYDRO PROJECT The Government of Uganda has officially commissioned the Karuma Hydropower Project (KHP), a 600 MW hydropower plant on the River Nile. The $1.7 billion facility, constructed by China's Sinohydro Corporation, is now Uganda's largest power generation installation, boosting the country's total generation capacity to over 2 GW. Fully financed by China, the project received a $1.4 billion loan from China's Exim Bank, with the Chinese Government covering remaining costs. The commissioning also included the launch of a 400 kV, 248 km transmission line to distribute electricity from the plant. Chinese Ambassador Zhang Lizhong hailed KHP as a "flagship project of China-Uganda cooperation," emphasizing its role in providing clean, affordable energy. The plant is expected to support power developments in neighboring countries like Rwanda, Tanzania and Kenya. Despite delays due to logistical challenges and the Covid-19 pandemic, the project's completion marks a significant milestone in Uganda's energy sector, with hydropower constituting over 91% of the country's electricity generation in 2023. ⚡ Follow MPS (Modern Power Systems) for all the latest news daily from the global power generation industry ⚡ #MPS #power #hydropower #renewableenergy #energysecurity

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $21 million grant to expand renewable energy in Tajikistan by modernizing the Golovnaya hydropower plant. The funding will be used to replace the power generation unit 4 at the Golovnaya plant, which ceased operations in 2019 due to mechanical damage. This unit was not included in the original ADB project approved in 2013. The initial project provided a $136 million grant to replace five of the plant’s six power generation units. It also involved rehabilitating switchyards, modernizing the Vose substation, and constructing the Rudaki substation along with a transmission line connecting Rudaki and Vose in southern Tajikistan. With these upgrades, the installed capacity of Golovnaya hydropower plant is expected to rise from 240MW to 274MW by 2026.
