The One Village One Product movement is a 40-year old Japanese 🇯🇵 regional development program. Communities selectively produce goods with high added value. One village produces one competitive and staple product as a community-venture to generate income and improve the standard of living in the village. This initiative has been spreading across many different countries. One lesson we can take from it: it starts with appreciation of local and traditional skills. Let's start appreciating some traditional and local skills and livelihoods, to give credits to communities. This week: the Katu weavers in Laos 🇱🇦 . In addition to being cotton growers, the Katu are skilled weavers who incorporate beading in their weaving. There are approximately 83,000 Katu people spread across villages in the Salavan, Sekong and Champasak provinces (in the South of Laos). In addition to cotton , the Katu also weave with jute and banana fibers. What a beauty, what a skill, what a inspiration! Check this video for a better look at this amazing technique!
