🚨 🚨 🚨 This week's events at Hire Heroes USA!!! Our Serving Spouses Program is hosting our monthly networking event for *clients only* on 3/5! If you are a current client, feel free to reach out to me or your Transition Specialist for the registration link! Join Hire Heroes USA this Thursday, March 7th for our first Virtual Career Fair of the year! Here are a few of tips to help you prepare for the event: 1. Come prepared and do your #research. - What companies will be there? Follow that company on LinkedIn, go to their People tab, and send personalized connection requests to #recruiters and/or #hiringmanagers. 2. Research some more. - Check out the company's website to see what positions they are hiring for. If you find positions that you'd be a fit for, apply beforehand! This will allow you to speak to the recruiter and tell them that you applied to X position on Y date with Z confirmation number. 3. Prepare your questions. - After reviewing the job description and applying, start thinking of some questions you want to ask. Show the recruiter that you've done your research, you know what you're talking about, and you are truly interested in this position. 4. Update your #resume. - You need to be sure to submit a tailored version of your resume when you are applying to jobs. Have that version easily accessible if the recruiter asks you to send it to them. Usually, the event will have you upload your resume beforehand. This can be a master resume that highlights all of your skills (because you are already going to have a tailored resume for those specific jobs you're applying to). 5. Value Proposition (elevator pitch). - You already know the roles you are interested in so now it's time to tailor that #valueproposition to those roles. Be #personable and #memorable but also be #strategic. Be sure you are telling the recruiter who you are and what you have to offer to this position and this company. 6. Plan accordingly. - By now you've done your research and you know who will be in attendance. Now, you need to map out your approach. Which employer do you want to speak to the most? Start with them and then make a list of all of the employers you want to meet with. This will help you determine which "line" to get in and in what order. 7. Dress to impress. - Even though this is a virtual event, you still want to give off the appearance that you care (because you do). If you don't want to get fully dressed from head to toe, make sure your top half is presentable! 8. Be Confident. - You’ve got this! This entire process can be intimidating but just go in there with confidence and show them what you have to offer. Say some affirmations but if those aren’t your niche, go over a few of those questions/answers out loud or even your value proposition.

Last year I landed interviews with Robinhood and Reddit, Inc. from attending the ColorStack Virtual Career Fair. With this year's ColorStack Virtual Career Fair approaching on August 22nd and 23rd and the Rewriting the Code Virtual Career Fair on August 14th, here are some tips to help you succeed at virtual career fairs: - If you can, put your camera on. I found that being one of the few people with my camera on made it easier for me to connect with others and leave a lasting impression. - Have your resume up to date and easily accessible. - Collect LinkedIn profiles and follow up. After the event, message attendees and recruiters, mentioning that you connected during the career fair. A tip: write down names to help remember who you spoke with. - Complete the forms DURING the career fair, don’t save them until later because a lot of them expire. I made this mistake and missed out on resume drops for a few companies. - Don’t stress about which booths to attend. My strategy was to focus on companies who don’t heavily recruit at my school because I knew it’d be one of my only chances to connect with them. If your school host career fairs, compare the company lists and check for any overlaps. You’ll likely be able to attend every booth you’re interested in but if you’re short on time at least make sure to complete the resume drops. - Listen actively during sessions and ask informed questions. Questions can be great conversation starters and engaging in conversations not only helps you stand out but also increases the likelihood of follow-ups. The recruiters who reached out to me were individuals I had conversations with at the fair. - Relax. I found virtual career fairs to be much more relaxed and less nerve-wracking than in-person ones. I didn’t do any preparation beforehand beyond having my resume ready and everything went well. Get comfortable, find a good spot to set up, and enjoy your time!

5 Game-Changing Tips to Stand Out at a Career Fair Career fairs are GOLDMINES for networking and landing job opportunities—if you play it right. As someone actively applying to software engineering roles, I’ve used these strategies to secure 3 Tech Roles in the past, and I’m sharing them with you! Here’s how to make the most out of your next career fair: 1. Do Your Homework → Research the companies attending. → Know their mission, products, and recent news. → Be ready to ask specific questions that show you’ve done your research. Why? Companies remember candidates who stand out as informed and curious. 2. Perfect Your Pitch → Practice a quick 30-second intro → Mention your skills, goals, and why you’re excited about their company. First impressions matter. This is your chance to shine. 3. Dress for the Role You Want → Keep it professional but approachable. → A neat outfit makes you memorable (and shows you care). 4. Bring Your Resume and Portfolio → Print out several copies of your CV, tailored to the roles you’re targeting. → Bonus points: Have a QR code linking to your GitHub or portfolio. 5. Follow Up → After meeting a recruiter, connect with them on LinkedIn. → Send a personalised message. Career fairs aren’t just about showing up—they’re about showing out. These techniques helped me land multiple opportunities, and they’ll work for you too. 💡 What’s YOUR go-to strategy for standing out at a career fair? Drop it in the comments! 📲 Follow me for more tips: Linkedin → Kabir Suri TikTok & Instagram → @CodingKabs
