December 2nd is the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. According to the United Nations: • An estimated 50 million people are in modern slavery, including 28 million in forced labor and 22 million in forced marriage. • Almost one in eight of all those in forced labor are children. More than half of these children are in commercial sexual exploitation. • 86% of forced labor is found in the private sector. • Almost 80% of those in forced commercial sexual exploitation are women or girls. #stopmodernslavery #stopforcedlabor #stopforcedmarriage #stopchildsexualexploitation

The Traveller Movement have created a Healthy Relationships toolkit to help young people know their rights, and spot and understand the warning signs of abuse. This toolkit was designed by-and-for Romani (Gypsy), Irish Traveller and Roma young people and parents to ensure it is culturally relevant and age-appropriate. The toolkit answers the following questions and more: 🟥What are the relationship red flags? 💡 How do I report a shame page? 💡What is the age of consent for marriage? 💡What are boundaries and how do I set them in my relationships? The recommendation paper from the Universal Truth CIC Roundtable on ending forced marriage is now available. It provides a roadmap for policymakers, practitioners, and communities to effectively combat forced marriage and support those affected by this human rights violation. Key recommendations include: ☑️ Overcoming community pressure and social control. ☑️ Strengthening the Forced Marriage etc. (Protection and Jurisdiction) (Scotland) Act (2011). ☑️ Addressing Racial Anxiety. Eradicating forced marriage demands collaboration and commitment across all sectors of society. Together, we can address root causes, challenge structural inequalities, and uphold the rights of every individual in Scotland. Let's work towards a future of freedom, equality, and dignity for all. Conflicts bring forth so many more challenges for young girls, like hindering their access to basic rights and making them much more susceptible to #genderbasedviolence. Today, 2 December, is International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, marking the original date of the adoption of the 'UN Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others', 75 years ago today. The work continues now in 2024 to eradicate contemporary forms of slavery, including trafficking in persons, forced commercial sexual exploitation and forced marriage. At Hope for Justice, we celebrate every step that brings us closer to our vision of a world free from slavery, whether that is someone choosing to take training to better respond to the signs of trafficking in their community; a policy change at the highest levels of government; or a child survivor being returned joyfully to their family, as in this photo.
