We say NO to violence against women and girls because child marriage, a form of violence, takes away girls' futures. Girls with little to no education are three times as likely to marry by the age of 18. Zonta works to end this human rights violation by working with our partners UNFPA and UNICEF USA through their Global Programme to End Child Marriage. #ForcedMarriage is a complex issue involving individuals being forced to marry or stay married against their will, recognized as a violation of human rights and a form of gender-based and honour-based violence. The "#NEVER_EASY"— Enhancing response and support to victims of forced marriage" best practice booklet outlines the challenges and necessary responses to address this issue effectively. One standout example is ViA (Associació Valentes I Acompanyades), a Catalonian NGO established in 2014 to combat forced marriages and a member of Girls Not Brides: The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage. ViA provides material assistance, emotional and psychological support, and educational empowerment, directly assisting around 40 women and girls annually. They also raise awareness in local schools, aiming to strengthen young people's self-confidence and autonomy. Former clients who have recovered now mentor current beneficiaries, creating a supportive cycle of empowerment. December 2nd is the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. According to the United Nations: • An estimated 50 million people are in modern slavery, including 28 million in forced labor and 22 million in forced marriage. • Almost one in eight of all those in forced labor are children. More than half of these children are in commercial sexual exploitation. • 86% of forced labor is found in the private sector. • Almost 80% of those in forced commercial sexual exploitation are women or girls. #stopmodernslavery #stopforcedlabor #stopforcedmarriage #stopchildsexualexploitation

The recommendation paper from the Universal Truth Roundtable on ending forced marriage is now available. It provides a roadmap for policymakers, practitioners, and communities to effectively combat forced marriage and support those affected by this human rights violation. Key recommendations include: ☑️Overcoming community pressure and social control. ☑️Strengthening the Forced Marriage etc. (Protection and Jurisdiction) (Scotland) Act (2011). ☑️Addressing Racial Anxiety. Eradicating forced marriage demands collaboration and commitment across all sectors of society. Together, we can address root causes, challenge structural inequalities, and uphold the rights of every individual in Scotland. Let's work towards a future of freedom, equality, and dignity for all. It is day 11 of the 16 days of Activism against Gender-based Violence. Every child deserves the right to a safe and healthy future, yet 36% of young girls in least developed countries are forced into marriage before 18, robbed of their dreams and potential (UNFPA, 2024). Forced and early marriage is a human rights violation that traps a girl in a cycle of poverty by ending her education, making young girls vulnerable to life-threatening complications during and after childbirth. We must advocate for stronger legal protections for our young girls, challenge harmful societal norms that encourage this practice and empower them through education and skill acquisition.
