Automotive lightweighting is primarily achieved through the adoption of new materials, new processes, and optimized structural designs. Its classification is mainly based on the technologies and methods used. In the 1970s, after the first oil crisis, automotive lightweighting began to be taken seriously as manufacturers sought to reduce vehicle weight to improve fuel efficiency. From 2020 to the present day, automotive lightweighting has been involved in all aspects of the entire vehicle, including the body, chassis, powertrain, etc. Additionally, the wave of electrification has brought new challenges and opportunities for lightweighting, especially in the design and material selection of battery packs.
The upstream area of automotive lightweighting mainly includes the production and supply of lightweight materials, such as high-strength steels, aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys, and carbon fiber composites. These material suppliers usually work closely with automotive component manufacturers to develop high-performance materials suitable for automotive lightweighting. The downstream application industries of automotive lightweighting are extensive, covering the entire automotive manufacturing industry. From body structure, chassis, powertrain to interior and exterior components, the application of lightweighting technology can be seen. In addition, automotive lightweighting also involves a number of related fields, such as aerospace, rail transportation, new energy, and so on.
