It is estimated that there are approximately 23 million out-of-school children in Pakistan, meaning that two out of every five school-aged children are out of school. The lack of schools, poverty, social norms (such as girls not leaving home alone, or the belief that madrassas teaching Islamic doctrines are better than attending a regular school) and various other factors imply that there is no easy solution, but if children cannot attend school, then education should go alongside them. This is the approach that non-formal education in Pakistan takes. JICA has been cooperating in this field for 20 years, and in addition to efforts to gain the understanding of society, JICA has been creating accelerated -learning programs or ALP (e.g. 6 years of primary schools content can be learned in 4 years, or elements of vocational training added at the junior high level) and training teachers. The government of Pakistan, as well as other donors and NGOs, are now using this rapid-learning material, and it is being used throughout the country. As a result of these efforts, the Pakistani government now allows children who have studied using these materials to sit for the primary and secondary school graduation examinations, and if they pass, they are awarded a diploma. A visit to a classroom in the suburbs of Islamabad showed me that children of different ages were energetically learning. Many children said that they started attending classes because their neighbours had started attending, and many children attended the same classes with their siblings. Some children also attended school while working. With only a fan to stir up the hot air (it was 34°C that day), I was empowered by the sparkling children and the enthusiastic teachers. "40 Maidens" project, supported by USAID Business Support Project, is organizing training sessions for 12 home-based female #artisans from three different regions of Bukhara, focusing on various #embroidery techniques. The training, ongoing until January 18, provides participants with the opportunity to master modern, high-demand designs while preserving traditional elements of the #craft.

#ACBAR’s Program Team - SHAPE TPP - will be conducting a Proposal Writing Training for 61 of its NGO partners, comprising of Cohort 1 and Cohort 2 organizations, during the last week of October. These trainings will be held in two batches, from 21 – 23 and from 29 – 31.
