What a whirlwind few weeks traveling up the west coast and repping Mews from #Portland to #Whistler (and both Vancouvers)! 🏔️
With events as diverse as the scenery, I immersed myself in the classic west coast hospitality. Starting in Portland at the North American Hostel Association Conference, I met some of North America's top hostel operators, then toured Vancouver's hotels, and wrapped up at the British Columbia Hotel Association Summit in Whistler. This journey underscored the unexpectedly converging paths of hostels and hotels, especially in terms of cultural integration, guest experience, and local engagement.
Both accommodation types are increasingly leveraging local culture to enhance guest experience. Hostels and hotels alike are curating unique local experiences—whether it's through local food tastings, partnerships with local artists for exclusive exhibitions, or tours that explore hidden neighborhood gems. These experiences not only enrich the guest's stay but also embed them deeper into the fabric of the local community.
Additionally, programming and events play a pivotal role in shaping a memorable stay. From live music nights featuring local bands to storytelling evenings or cultural workshops, both hostels and hotels are finding innovative ways to entertain and engage their guests. This not only boosts guest satisfaction but also encourages longer stays and repeat visits.
Lastly, the importance of incorporating the local vibe into the property’s ambiance cannot be overstated. Both hostels and hotels are adopting design elements that reflect the local culture, using decor that resonates with the area’s heritage, and creating spaces that reflect the lifestyle of the local community. This approach not only appeals to travellers seeking authenticity but also fosters a sense of connection between the guest and the destination. Authenticity is key, and the hospitality industry is clearly learning this.
As the lines between hostels and hotels blur more than some might expect, the focus remains clear: enhance the guest experience by deeply integrating local culture, providing engaging programming, and ensuring a genuine local experience. These strategies not only distinguish properties in a competitive market but also forge stronger connections with the local community and culture.
So many more updates to come soon! There's a lot to catch you all up on.
