Blue Planet Alliance’s Post

In the Tahitian language, "Rapa Nui" translates to "Big Rapa," distinguishing it from the smaller island of Rapa Iti, located about 400 miles away in French Polynesia. It is also known, globally, as Easter Island, and is celebrated for the 900-or-so enormous carved statues of human heads, known as moai. As the Galapagos Islands saw with biological evolution, Rapa Nui's isolation fostered a unique cultural evolution, which led to a sophisticated society that thrived independently for centuries. Rapa Nui is one of 10 island nations and territories that participated in our third Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Program, which took place in Hawaii in October, and brought the total of island countries who have matriculated through our Program to 28. We project that 70 countries and territories will come through our program by the end of 2026, which will be an incredibly powerful diplomatic bloc that can pressure the globe's largest polluters to ditch dirty energy, and end climate change.
