As architects, we know homes 🏠 should be tailored to people's needs. Yet, cookie-cutter housing and condos often prioritize aesthetics over individuality, sacrificing personal expression for a uniform look. This raises questions about how we use space, as these developments often lead to depersonalized homes and standardized needs. Moreover, they're often isolated from public transportation and green spaces, creating faceless homes. Urban planning offers the best solution by tailoring spaces to community needs and fostering interaction. This approach can create a sense of belonging and a unique community identity. But when introducing something new to a community, both the developer team and community need to think beyond the site, looking at a wider suburb-level context and approaching it from the lens of repair. - What has been damaged or lost? - What can be improved in the wider area? - What role will this development play in the larger community? Addressing these questions indicates a much-wider ambition that shifts the dial from distrust to trust in the development team. With this approach, negotiations with Council and neighbours can take on a more positive collaborative approach. Research has shown that resident communities who feel connected to their suburbs report better wellbeing. By ensuring that developmental interventions (including architecture) support the community, we can help the community repair and strengthen their connection to their suburb, thereby supporting overall wellbeing. Working from home has become a preferred option for many. According to the Pew Research Center, around 22 million employed adults in the U.S. work from home full-time (roughly 14% of all employed adults). As a result, we are seeing more multifamily architecture designed with work-from-home residents in mind. This offers a unique alternative to multifamily architecture in Houston while aligning more with residents’ interests. 🏙️ Urban design can change the lives of autistic people. The way we create our public spaces - from the colours and textures we use to the urban journeys we plan - can be improved to better support their independence and quality of life. At our Neurodiverse Design workshop, we came together with planners, placemakers, architects and people with lived experience to discuss how we can design better spaces for neurodivergent people, including autistic people. And while no two autistic people are the same, many share similar traits - such as having repetitive patterns in behaviour and sensory sensitivities - and would benefit from specific planning and architectural decisions. Pruitt Igoe, The High Cost Of Modernism Today, we are taking on a tale about the challenges of modernist architecture in addressing urban housing needs effectively, making it the most complex example in our series. The Pruitt-Igoe Housing Project in St. Louis, Missouri, is widely regarded as an architectural failure due to a combination of poor design choices, inadequate funding, and broader socio-economic issues that plagued its existence. Some of the issues are Flawed Architectural Design: With High-Rise Configuration and Poorly Designed Common Spaces, this design did not foster community interaction but instead quickly became sites of crime rather than places for social interaction. Maintenance Issues: The project’s reliance on rent from low-income tenants made it vulnerable to financial instability and physical neglect. Crime and vandalism: Widespread opposition to public housing initiatives limited financial support and contributed to the negative perceptions surrounding projects like Pruitt-Igoe. The complex became a hotspot for criminal activity, with gangs and vandalism rampant, earning it a reputation as a dangerous and neglected area. Today, the Pruitt-Igoe site remains vacant, with plans for new development pending. The project’s complex history serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of considering broader social, economic, and political contexts when designing and implementing public housing initiatives. With the Government pushing hard for new #housing, including affordable and social, what will create the quality, along with the quantity, that we urgently need to see? Speaking at this year’s Landscape Institute #JellicoeLecture, LDA Design Chair, Frazer Osment, will argue that there is a need for strong and creative landscape-led spatial planning to underpin growth and delivery of the Government’s housing agenda. Get this right and it could also accelerate delivery.   The call to action is to put #wellbeing at the heart of all future housing plans. In this, the roles of landscape architect, urban designer and planner have never been more important. Together, they have the expertise to lead the charge for change, and their collaboration is key to creating better places. All three need to be visionary in their approach and focussed on the widest positive outcomes. But what are the challenges to success and what are the practical steps to overcoming them?   Frazer is involved in #planning for growth and #masterplanning at scale and has been involved in the design and delivery of some of the largest new settlements and urban extensions in the UK, including Welborne Garden Village. He is an advisor to Homes England on strategic growth, including between Oxford and Cambridge.   The Jellicoe Lecture, a highlight of the Landscape Institute's calendar, will be well worth joining. This article outlines the predictions of some visionary professional builders in the US on how innovative architecture and evolving social dynamics will redefine homebuilding over the next 20 years. Many of the builders surveyed predicted that the homes of the future will be more open and connected to community and intergenerational living and that the shift in today’s homes towards shared spaces that promote connection among neighbors will only continue to grow. Reflecting on Ethical Urban Design: Addressing Anti-Homeless Architecture As urban planners and architects, it's our responsibility to create inclusive and welcoming public spaces that serve all members of our community. However, the prevalence of anti-homeless architecture in our cities raises crucial questions about the values underlying our design decisions. Anti-homeless architecture, such as metal spikes, sloped benches, and hostile landscaping, may aim to deter individuals experiencing homelessness from occupying public spaces. Yet, these measures often exacerbate social exclusion and marginalization, rather than addressing the root causes of homelessness. As professionals in the built environment, we must advocate for ethical urban design principles that prioritize compassion, dignity, and social justice. Instead of resorting to punitive measures, let's focus on creating spaces that foster inclusivity, accessibility, and support for all individuals, regardless of their housing status.
