📣 Last week Richard Eastham took to the stage at the Urban Design Group, Neighbourhood Renaissance conference showcasing how we engage local communities in the urban design process. Using our recent experience at Waterlooville he shared how to place local people at the heart of the regeneration process…. Missed the conference? Fear not, Richard has compiled his top ten tips! 💡 1️⃣ Assume the best about people. If they have turned up to take part, it's because they care. 2️⃣ People are often angry simply because they are confused. Which leads to … 3️⃣ … the need for urban planners, urban designers and architects to use their expertise and experience to reassure the public and demystify the development process. 4️⃣ Don’t rush! Start with an open mind, listen to people and make it known you are listening by recording what people are telling you, right in front of them. Use tried and tested but simple techniques like notebook and pen or digital tech like GPS trackers. 5️⃣ Treat young people’s work with respect and give their ideas the same attention and scrutiny as input from older people. It is possible to create meaningful quantifiable data from a series of big, bold drawings produced by children. 6️⃣ Take the project into the heart of the neighbourhood, by using a prominent and accessible venue. Invite those that took part early days back into the process, building a cohort of local expertise. 7️⃣ Create obvious feedback loops – “you said this, so we’ve done that” – explaining the rationale behind the design response. Don’t be shy of details as the public have a desire for information. Treat them as intelligent and curious, don’t just provide a simplified summary. 8️⃣ Variety is vital. Use all available techniques to reach a wide audience, such as digital, analogue, models, maps, drawings, photos, film and text. 9️⃣ Keep the conversation open-ended but take firm decisions. Without decisions on the fundamentals, and without sound design principles, it’s hard to make progress and get into the details. 1️⃣0️⃣ Let people know that regeneration is complex, hard work, and takes time. They will appreciate the places in which they live and work all the more for this and feel part of a shared process. With the Government pushing hard for new #housing, including affordable and social, what will create the quality, along with the quantity, that we urgently need to see? Speaking at this year’s Landscape Institute #JellicoeLecture, LDA Design Chair, Frazer Osment, will argue that there is a need for strong and creative landscape-led spatial planning to underpin growth and delivery of the Government’s housing agenda. Get this right and it could also accelerate delivery. The call to action is to put #wellbeing at the heart of all future housing plans. In this, the roles of landscape architect, urban designer and planner have never been more important. Together, they have the expertise to lead the charge for change, and their collaboration is key to creating better places. All three need to be visionary in their approach and focussed on the widest positive outcomes. But what are the challenges to success and what are the practical steps to overcoming them? Frazer is involved in #planning for growth and #masterplanning at scale and has been involved in the design and delivery of some of the largest new settlements and urban extensions in the UK, including Welborne Garden Village. He is an advisor to Homes England on strategic growth, including between Oxford and Cambridge. The Jellicoe Lecture, a highlight of the Landscape Institute's calendar, will be well worth joining. Tactical urbanism, also called Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper, is a "try before you buy" approach to improving public spaces, streets or parks. Social Life Project says: "Short-term, low-cost improvements can act as stepping stones to larger more substantial investments while achieving immediate results. These “Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper” interventions also enable experimentation with design changes before they are permanently constructed." An excellent example of this approach was the transformation of on-street parking and road space into the Mary Street Piazza in Highgate, Western Australia. The piazza was designed by PLACE Lab, led and delivered by the City of Vincent, and built by Le Grove Landscaping. The project was also championed by the local #TownTeam - the Beaufort Street Network. The 2 week public space trial showed: 💲 local businesses that the loss of car #parking would not adversely affect them. In fact, the creation of a new public space significantly improved a number of surrounding businesses. The critics became supporters. 🙂 local residents that a new public space would not attract "anti-social behaviour" or create other imagined issues 🌳 the need for and popularity of a new, free public space on a thriving, busy street. Intuitively placemakers know that more high quality public spaces are needed. Rather than talking about it or trying to convince the sceptics, a trial demonstrates it.
