Seismic reflection data presented by Scholz et al (1998) from the Baikal Rift in Asia and the Lake Malawi segment of the the EARS show the significant potential for potential reservoir development with the rift. These data image both more recent and currently active rift zones, respectively. The seismic imaging is enhanced by the collection of data in a semi-marine environment and lack of an overlying sequence of clastic/carbonate overburden of several 1000's of ft. Seismic imaging of the Midcontinent Rift within Lake Superior has revealed similar characteristics, but the rift geology is exposed at the surface. Extrapolating similar geometry 1000km to the south along the rift is likely futile due to variations along the rift in both geometry and development. The potential for hydrogen reservoir development exists within the buried Midcontinent Rift further southward. A key to unlocking the potential is the best imaging possible. Ontario’s Haldimand county is home to some of the best geology for Carbon Sequestration and Storage (CCS), and it is close to much of the carbon-generating infrastructure present in eastern Canada. Absolute Imaging has been awarded a 2D project which will require both imaging (non-AVO) and amplitude-preserving (AVO) workflows. Located in the Canadian Shield region, the Pre-Stack Time Migration (PSTM) processing and reprocessing project comes with challenges related to the near-surface high velocity layer. Absolute Imaging’s extensive toolbox of noise suppression algorithms, coupled with our hard-rock experience, will be key to solving these challenges. #geology #CCS #energy #seismic

In the Geotechnics and Geology section, we work on modifying geomechanical properties for existing infrastructure, which can ensure their adaptability and resilience. Yesterday, Emil Mejlhede Kinslev presented how changing the pore water composition in clay formations may be used to ensure the sealing of carbon storage reservoirs. Although there are limited well penetrations into the Precambrian mafic section of the Midcontinent Rift, there are enough wells to draw general conclusions. Even within the central segment of the western arm of the Midcontinent Rift, geochemical data published by Seifert and Anderson (1996) reveal that portions of the mafics are highly enriched in both Al, Fe, and Mg. Over 20% wt volume Al and Fe was noted, as well as up to 13% volume Mg. Evidence of deep burial metamorphism along with hydrothermal alteration in saline waters and/or surface weathering is likely evidenced as well. More extensive/detailed vertical and horizontal mapping of the likely extents of alteration and mineralogical variation are likely only possible through an integration of higher resolution geophysical data integrated with well data. #geology #hydrogen #geologichydrogen #naturalhydrogen #whitehydrogen #hydrogeneconomy #hydrogenimpact

Playing with low-res large-scale model in Environmental Site Model (ESM) ESM has been built for high-resolution site characterization (HRSC) using soil and direct push probing data. A typical high-resolution site is a couple of hundred meters on each side and 10 to 30 meters deep, with a model grid resolution of around 1 cubic meter. Data wise however, a large regional sized model with a lower resolution is the same thing. In this example, geophysical resistivity data to a depth of 300 meters and an area of 400 square kilometers, is sliced in X, Y, and Z. Model grid resolution is 100000 cubic meters. In a world where access to clean water remains a major challenge for many populations, the Geological Bureau of the Comoros #BGC continues to stand out for its unwavering commitment to the well-being of communities, whether urban or rural. Leveraging its unparalleled expertise, the BGC is dedicated to addressing water supply issues using innovative and effective methods. Currently, the BGC is focusing its efforts on the locality of #MRAMANI, on the island of Anjouan in the Comoros, where challenges related to clean water are particularly pressing. Faced with this critical situation, a team of hydrogeologists, geophysicists, and geologists has been dispatched for a five-day mission. Their objective? To utilize the electrical method with the Syscal Pro Switch to conduct high-precision geophysical studies aimed at identifying groundwater resources. This mission is progressing smoothly thanks to the joint efforts of the BGC experts and the local youth. Their active collaboration and unwavering commitment will soon pave the way for the discovery of groundwater sources, thereby providing a sustainable solution for clean water supply in M’RAMANI.
