🌊 Managing ‘Negative’ Crew Members: Turning Challenges into Opportunities 🌊 Working on a yacht brings together a diverse mix of personalities, and sometimes that includes crew members who lean towards the more ‘negative’ side. While it can be a challenge to manage, it’s important to recognise that a slightly negative mindset isn’t necessarily a bad thing — in fact, it can be a strength! A crew member who spots potential problems, has sharp critical analysis skills, and isn’t afraid to voice concerns can be a real asset. The key is finding a balance and not letting negativity turn toxic. Valuing their input, setting clear boundaries, and leading with a positive example are crucial steps to maintaining a healthy crew dynamic. I attended a meeting that was scheduled for 10:00 AM. I arrived on time, ready to discuss and move forward with our agenda. But as the minutes ticked by, it became clear that not everyone shared the same sense of urgency. By the time everyone had finally gathered, nearly half an hour had passed. We were already behind schedule. This experience reminded me just how important it is to keep time, especially in a professional setting. Punctuality isn’t just about being on time, it’s about showing respect for others, valuing their time. Let’s all commit to honoring our schedules and being punctual. It’s a small change that can lead to big improvements in our work and relationships. #goodtimemanagement #time #punctuality #professionalism #value

People & Culture Insight Power of Intention Her voice tends to be flat, her speech was so textual, her face almost expressionless, and even though she ends with a thank you, no feeling at present. It happened on my domestic flight last week; hence, I saw this scenario many times when I board a plane, especially when sitting in the Emergency Exit row. I imagine listening to an explanation via a Reel that uses AI-generated voice combined with a comedian's laughter might be much more enjoyable than this. Although the flight crew has delivered these instructions multiple times. This comes to an insight where the idea behind practicing or doing something repeatedly is to improve performance. Observing the "performance" of how the instructions regarding the emergency door are delivered, reinforces my understanding that the main foundation of effective human improvement or development lies not only in the frequency of repetition, but more importantly in the intention. Meanwhile, repetition serves to strengthen the reality of that intent. In this case, those flight attendants, their flying hours conveying the emergency door instructions seems do not make them more fluent in their delivery; rather, the tempo becomes faster, stiffer, and increasingly devoid of feeling. The representation of the underlying intent from these cabin crew members emerges more strongly through the behavior they exhibit. You can clearly see the difference between those who want to do their job quickly and those who intend to help, ease life, and ensure the safety of those around them in their supervision or service. On several occasions, I often avoided eye contact or even just looked down when listening to instructions regarding these emergency exits. There is a feeling of reluctance to see how much the crew struggles and how little they enjoy conveying these important safety messages. I imagine, if this noble task continues to be delivered in such a manner, AI could easily take over this role. Do you remember a video about a flight attendant delivering safety messages humorously? If I’m not mistaken from The Westjet. I can still remember his face to this day. This person had intentions beyond merely helping others; notice how he successfully captured the passengers' attention and made the safety message easy to remember. He even made the fussy children during takeoff forget their discomfort. Good intentions supported by competent skills make the impact of his work go beyond just completing a task. I am pleased to see that today's best airline recruitment and assessment criteria heavily pointing the quality of people relationships and interactions, especially to the customers they serve. Build a better intention for a more positive working culture What do you think?

For many people, showing up late for work is no big deal. However, showing up late to work late can communicate several things, and it often depends on the context and frequency. Consistently arriving late may signal to colleagues and supervisors that you’re not fully dedicated to your role or the team's goals. It highlights your lack of commitment which can form a negative perception about you and rule you out for opportunities. Regular tardiness might suggest difficulties in managing time effectively, which can affect productivity and project timelines. Your superiors may avoid giving you time sensitive assignments because if it is urgent, “John” is not your guy. To mitigate negative perceptions, clear communication about any challenges you're facing and a commitment to improving punctuality can help maintain trust and professionalism in the workplace.

Being on time is not just etiquette – it's your reputation. Here's how mastering punctuality can elevate your business and personal life: 1. Punctuality shows respect. Respect for a person's: - Time - Effort - Attention - Professionalism By valuing their time, you are valuing them. 2. Careful planning prevents tardiness. Anticipate the time and effort it takes to: - Get ready and leave - Travel to the location - Accomplish tasks beforehand - Unforeseen circumstances Plan accordingly. 3. Be at least 10 minutes early. Arriving early gives you leeway in case of unexpected events. Even better, it shows eagerness. Being early is better than being on time. 4. Be upfront about potential lateness. Acknowledge the situation as soon as possible. Inform anyone involved in your plans. Offer a solution. 5. Set a reminder 20 minutes before. This serves as a mental nudge prepping you to complete any last-minute tasks and be ready to leave on time. 6. Create a checklist to follow. This helps you organize and allocate time effectively. Ensure that you cover all your bases. Mastering punctuality: - Solidifies trust and reliability - Prevents last-minute stress - Reduces inefficiencies - Increases productivity - Shows respect and professionalism In conclusion, punctuality is more than just showing up on time.
